Hockey (2/18) Gornick, Olson score twice in 4-2 Air Force victory
Derek Olson and Brian Gornick each scored two goals to lead Air Force to a 4-2 victory over Concordia College, in a non-conference college hockey game Friday night at the Cadet Ice Arena.
Coming off of a big win over Alabama-Huntsville last week, the Falcons opened the game with two goals in the first five minutes. Just over a minute into the first period, defenseman Bobby Pate's shot from the point was saved by Cobber goalie Bryan Howard. But Olson collected the rebound and sent a back-hand through Howard's legs for his 11th of the season. Exactly three minutes later, Gornick skidded a soft shot through traffic from between the circles that also went through the five hole for a 2-0 Falcon lead.
Concordia, 17-5-2 overall and ranked eighth in the nation in Division III, made a run at the Falcons early in the second period and began putting pressure on AFA goalie Sean Broderick. Broderick got the start for the injured Marc Kielkucki who sat out with a bruised knee. Broderick made several key saves in the period to preserve the Falcons' two-goal lead. Late in the period, Gornick gave the Falcons a 3-0 lead with a power play goal at 16:55. Andy Berg fired a shot from the point that was saved. Rodgers was on the right post and tipped the puck out to Gornick who buried his 12th goal of the season.
Mistakes in the third period got Concordia back in the game. Seven minutes into the period, CC's Guy Clairmont cleared the puck out of the Falcons' zone. Pate attempted to stop the puck in the neutral but it got past him and the Cobbers had a breakaway opportunity. Brian Nealon broke up the shutout with his goal at 7:41. Air Force answered two minutes later as Olson got his second goal of the night when he finished a rebound from Nels Grafstrom. The Cobbers stayed close with seven minutes left as Rob Gramer scored a power play goal at 12:56.
Air Force, 14-15-2 overall, out-shot their opponents from Moorhead,
Minn., 28-21 in the game. Broderick earned his first win of the season
as he made 19 saves in the game, including 10 in the second period.
The same two teams conclude the series Saturday night at 5 p.m. MST.
