Senior Steve Aronson had four points, including a go-ahead goal on a rebound shot in the third period, to lead St. Thomas (24-2-2) to a 4-2 win over visiting Concordia-Moorhead (19-7-2) in game one of a best-of-2 MIAC men's hockey playoff series at the Fairgrounds Coliseum.
UST, which has won 11 in a row and is ranked second nationally, will win the playoff with a win or tie in Sunday's 4 p.m. game. If the Cobbers win, a 20-minute mini-game will determine the series champ and automatic NCAA qualifier.
Aronson started the game tied with Mark Hentges at 226 career points.
He had three assists and the
go-ahead goal and now has 230 points -- four away from the MIAC record
of 234 set by Andre Beaulieu in 1965.
Concordia senior Jason DiMatteo scored twice within a 16-second span of the first period to stake the Cobbers to a 2-0 lead. Nick Oprish scored twice in the second period to for the Toms to deadlock the game, the latter on a power-play goal.
Aronson scored 12 minutes into the third with a rebound of Andy Disch's shot for a 3-2 lead, and Brian Bolf added a goal at 18:37 for the final margin.
Brad Moore stopped 30 of 32 shots for the Toms to improve to 22-1-1
on the season. Bryan Howard stopped 27 of 31 shots.
