St. Thomas tops Concordia 69-59 in Moorhead.

Concordia, missing out on a chance to tie for the MIAC lead, lost 69-59 to St. Thomas tonight in Moorhead. The Cobbers fell to 7-3 overall, 5-2 in the MIAC. St. Thomas improved to 7-0 in the MIAC, 9-1 overall. Molly Hayden led the Tommies with 21 points. Mary Thomes added 17 and led St. Thomas with 7 rebounds.  Brandi Myers led the Cobbers with 17 points.

After St. Thomas jumped out to an early lead at 24-12 the Cobbers rallied to trail by just 28-21 at the half. They gained their only lead of the second half at 38-37 with 15:27 left in the game. Concordia trailed 41-40 with 13 minutes left before St. Thomas respondedwith two consecutive Missy Pederson 3-pointers. The Cobbers did not get closer than five points the rest of the way.

UST women's basketball alone in conference lead

*The St. Thomas women's basketball team, ranked 12th nationally, won its opening three games of January to run its winning streak to seven under first-year head coach Tricia Dornisch. The Toms' lone season loss came at Division II Cal Poly-Pomona.

*The Toms, alone in the MIAC lead at 6-0, improved to 8-1 on the season with a 56-48 win Monday at St. Olaf, an 88-51 home win Wednesday over Augsburg, and Saturday's 55-53 home win over Carleton. Senior forward Molly Hayden, a Kodak HM All-American last season, averaged 20.6 ppg and 6.6 rpg in the three wins and is averaging 18 ppg on the season.

*Hayden scored the winning basket with 13 seconds left Saturday as the Toms edged Carleton. The Toms fell behind 10-0 and 16-2 before rallying. It was UST's 62nd win in its last 64 home games and its 20th consecutive win over Carleton. Hayden has scored in double figures in her last 15 games.

*Right behind 6-0 UST in the 22-game MIAC race are St. Ben's, Concordia and Gustavus, all at 5-1 and Carleton at 4-2.

*Wednesday's victory over Augsburg was UST's 29th in a row over the Auggies.

*Wednesday's win also improved the St. Thomas all-time home record in women's hoops to 200-22, including a 61-2 record at Schoenecker Arena since Jan. 1995.

*UST has the second best W-L record in NCAA Division III over the last 10 seasons. The Toms won the 1991 NCAA national title and placed third nationally in both 1995 and 1996. They are one of two women's basketball teams to make the NCAA Div. III playoffs in each of the last 13 seasons. *The Toms play three more prime MIAC contenders in the next eight days -- after tonight's game at Concordia, they also host Gustavus Wednesday night (7:30 p.m.) and Bethel Saturday (3 p.m.) before playing next Monday night at preseason favorite St. Ben's.
