4/25 Concordia Chisels Out First
Game Win over Hamline 8-4.
Series Summary -
Concordia jumped on Hamline early in both games, kept the Pipers
from ever getting a lead and swept the sun-filled doubleheader 8-4, 3-2
in Moorhead.
The Cobbers used a potent 13-hit attack in game one to chisel out an 8-4 victory in game one before getting another stellar pitching performance from sophomore Bryan Marudas (Hinckley, Minn.) in the nightcap. The two victories keep the Cobbers on track to earn a spot in the four-team MIAC playoff tournament. Their record is 8-4 in league play and 9-6 overall, while Hamline drops to 4-6 in the MIAC and 8-10 overall.
In the first game sophomore pitcher Derek Dormanen (Menahga, Minn.) went six innings allowing only one earned run to pick up his third win of the season. The Cobbers broke on top early, scoring three runs in the first inning. All three runs were courtesy of singles. Ryan Hebrink (Fr., Sacred Heart, Minn.) provided the only power of the day for either team as he smashed his third home run of the season over the left field fence in the third inning. Hebrink also had a mammoth shot ruled just foul in the fifth. The home plate umpire ruled the ball tailed foul before it reached the fair pole. Dormanen helped his cause at the plate as well as he extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a single in the first. He ended the game 2-for-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored. Hebrink was also 2-for-4 in the contest to go along with 3 RBI's. Five Concordia players had multiple hit games as the Cobbers tagged Piper starting pitcher Troy Urdahl for 13 hits and eight runs.
Jeremy Hinderks (Fr., Renville, Minn.) pitched the seventh inning for Concordia allowing one run.
In game two, Concordia used a two-run first to stake pitcher Bryan Marudas to an early lead. Hebrink continued to swing the hot bat as he doubled home Dormanen and give the Cobbers the early lead. The deadly duo of Dormanen and Hebrink combined to give Concordia a three-run lead in the fourth as Dormanen singled start the inning and Hebrink forced him to second by earning a walk. After Matt Nustad (Sr., Detroit Lakes, Minn.) sacrificed the runners to second and third catcher Isaac Hjermstad (Sr., Park Rapids, Minn.) scored Dormanen with a sacrifice fly.
Lefty Marudas was in control for the first six innings, allowing just four hits and at one point retiring 10 straight Piper batters. In the seventh he started to tire and Hamline was able to push two runs across the plate. Marudas finally earned the complete game victory when he forced Doug Amsden to ground back to the mound to end the game with the game-tying run at third base.
Concordia will host Bethel tomorrow at 2:30 in another key MIAC series.
