44/26 Concordia Doubles Up Bethel
9-7, 7-2.
Series Summary -
Concordia used a potent offense in the first game and an opportunistic
defense in the second to double up Bethel 9-7 and 7-2.
The Cobbers belted out four home runs in the first game and overcame a two-run deficit in the fifth inning to take the opener. In the second half of the twin bill Concordia's defense turned inning-ending double plays in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to complete the sweep. With the sweep the Cobbers put themselves in the thick of the playoff race with a 10-4 league record. They are 11-6 overall. Bethel slides to 2-10 in the MIAC and 15-14-1 overall.
In the opener, the two teams combined for seven home runs as the prevailing wind was blowing out to left field.
Jesse Rostad (Sr., Barnesville, MN) clouted two homers and Chad Felstul (Jr., Morris, MN) and Matt Nustad (Sr., Detroit Lakes, Minn.) each added one. Senior Jon Nuss had two home runs for the Royals, and also doubled to drive in four runs for the game. Jason Phillips (Sr., Fargo, ND) came on in relief of Cobber starter Isaac Triebold (So., Oriska, ND) to pick up his first collegiate victory. Phillips entered the game in the fourth inning and gave up two runs in the fifth before settling down and blanking Bethel in the last two frames.
Sophomore thrower Travis Anderson (Fargo, ND) was the story of the second game as he held the powerful Royal offense at bay for six innings. He allowed five hits and only one earned run, and helped the Cobber offense carve out an eight run lead. Secondbaseman Tim Miller (Jr., Bloomington, MN) had a key hit in the fifth inning to break the game wide open and he was instrumental on the defensive side as he was a part of all three double plays. Designated hitter Jeremy Morgenroth (Sr., Perham, MN) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Derek Dormanen (So., Menahga, MN) kept his hitting streak alive in both games. He has now hit safely in 14 straight games. In the first game he had an infield single in the fifth inning, and in the second game he again singled in the fifth, this time to left field. Jesse Rostad had his consecutive game on-base streak snapped. Going into the nightcap he had reached base in 13 straight games. Felstul took advantage of being in between Rostad and Dormanen in the batting order. For the afternoon he went 4-for-7 with a home run and three runs scored.
The Cobbers have now won four straight games. They will travel to St.
Paul on Saturday to take on Macalester at 1:00.
