4/28 Concordia Stumbles Twice
Against Macalester 7-6, 16-3.
Series Summary -
Concordia took a step backwards towards securing fourth place and the
final MIAC playoff spot, as they dropped a heartbreaking doubleheader to
Macalester 7-6 and 16-3 in St. Paul. The Cobbers were derailed by another
late-inning rally as they lost a one-run lead in the bottom of the seventh,
and ended up losing in extra inning in the first game of the series. The
Scots proved to be too much in the finale as they belted out 16 runs on
19 hits. It is the most hits and runs the Cobbers have surrendered since
April 5th of last season.
To add insult to injury, sophomore Derek Dormanen (So., Menahga, Minn.) had his 15-game hitting streak snapped in the second game. The streak was among the top five hitting streaks of all time for Concordia baseball.
In the opener Concordia scored in the opening frame when Chad Felstul (Jr., Morris, Minn.) connected on his third home run of the season. Senior Eric Wold, making his first start of the season, lasted until the fourth inning when he left the game with the score tied at three. The teams traded two-run innings in the fifth before the Cobbers jumped on top in the sixth when Matt Nustad (Sr., Detroit Lakes, Minn.) hit a solo home run of his own. Macalester tied the score in the bottom of the seventh when they led off the inning with two doubles and tagged starter turned reliever Derek Dormanen with game tying run. The Scots won the game in the eighth as first year reliever Jeremy Hinderks (Renville, Minn.) entered the game and gave up the decisive run before recording an out.
Jesse Rostad (Sr., Barnesville, Minn.) also went deep for the Cobbers, connecting on his fifth home run of the season in the third inning, it was also a solo shot. Shortstop Dormanen extended his hitting streak to 15 games, going 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.
Macalester carried over the momentum from game one directly into game two, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. They also added a four-run third to put the game out of reach. First year standout Ryan Hebrink (Sacred Heart, Minn.), who usually plays the outfield, was called to fill in for the Cobbers in the starting rotation. The Cobbers were down to their number six starter due to the amount of games played during the week. Hebrink lasted until the third inning giving up the first seven Scot runs. The two bright spots for Concordia were home runs by Felstul and A.J. Bunkowske (So., Vergas, Minn.). For Bunkowske it was his first round tripper of the season, while Felstul homered for the third time in the last four games.
Concordia inches back to a pack of three teams that are all within one game of one another. The Cobbers sport a 10-6 conference marked which is closely followed by Gustavus (7-7), Hamline (7-7) and Macalester (6-8). Concordia's overall record slips to 11-8. Macalester pulls within three games of Concordia at 6-8 while they improve to 11-20 on the year.
Concordia will travel across town to play NDSU on Monday at 6:00 at
Newman Field, home of the FM Redhawks. The Cobbers return to conference
play next Saturday when they travel to Northfield to take on defending
conference champion St. Olaf.
