5/12 Concordia Finishes Fourth
at MIAC Championships.
Concordia held off a strong challenge from Gustavus,
and claimed fourth place at the 2001 MIAC Track and Field Championships.
The Cobbers finished the meet with 102 points, which was three better than
the fifth place Gusties. St. Thomas won the meet with a total score of
184 points.
Steve Edlund (Cyrus, Minn.) captured the 3000M Steeplechase in a time of 9:29.50 which provisionally qualifies him for the NCAA Division III National Meet. It is also the fifth fastest time in school history. Joe Schmidgall (Jr., Morris, Minn.) captured the High Jump with a leap of 6'7", also a provisional qualifying mark.
The Cobbers continued to shine in the throwing event where they captured a first, a second and three third place finishes in the four events. Joel Nelson (Sr., Fargo, N.D.) won the Hammer Throw with a toss of 172'2", a provisionally qualifying toss, and also finished third in the Shot Put. Sophomore Trent Hagen (Pelican Rapids, Minn.) was the runner-up in the Discus with a national provisional qualifying toss of 157'3". Jeff Hertel (Sr., Fargo, N.D.) finished third in the Javelin with a toss of 173'2", and Brad Ragan finished third in the Hammer Throw with a 148'7" mark. All of the "top three" performances earn All-Conference Honors.
The fourth place finish marks the fifth straight year Concordia has finished in the top five at the outdoor championship meet.

After 1st Day of MIAC Championships.
Concordia is in fourth place after one day of the MIAC Track Championships.
The Cobbers have amassed 39 points which is only six points out of second
place and 18 points behind meet leader St. Thomas.
Concordia received two stellar performances from throwers on Friday.
Joel Nelson (Sr., Fargo, N.D.) won the Hammer Throw with a toss of 172'
2". The distance provisionally qualifies him for the national meet and
is his longest throw of the season. Trent Hagen (So., Pelican Rapids, Minn.)
finished second in the Discus with a toss of 157' 3". He also provisionally
qualifies for the national meet and earns All-Conference honors for the
very first time.
