12/09 Concordia Outlasts St. Olaf 60-54.
Concordia reversed the script from Wednesday's lost to Augsburg, and outlasted St. Olaf 60-54. In the game against Augsburg the Cobbers came out and shot 60% in the first half only to fade in the second by shooting a paltry 23%. Against St. Olaf the Cobbers had a reversal of fortune as they shot 11-for-32 (.344) in the opening frame and lit it up in the second half shooting 10-for-17 (.584). Once again the Cobbers stuck to the script of letting Joe Snowden (Sr., St. Paul, MN) fire from the outside, and Jeff Ubben (Jr., Moorhead, MN) pound away underneath. Snowden led all scorers with 13 points, nine points under his average, while Ubben countered for 11 points. Chris Thomas (So., Sioux Falls, SD) energized the team when Concordia went on a 14-0 run at the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half. That run proved to be the deciding factor in the game as both teams were struggling to find a rhythm and neither team could muster more than a six point lead.
The victory is Concordia's first league win of the year and puts their record at 1-1 in the MIAC and 4-2 overall. The loss leaves St. Olaf still looking for their first MIAC win as they fall to 0-3 and 2-5.
Concordia will play at home against Hamline on Saturday, December 16th
at 4:00 in their last game before the Christmas Holiday.

Concordia (0-1 in the MIAC, 3-2 Overall)
Concordia is trying to recapture those hazy,
crazy days of California. After losing the season opener to MSU-Moorhead,
the Cobbers promptly took the West Coast by storm, winning three straight
and capturing the title of the Redlands tournament. The team arrived early
Monday morning and had to play their first MIAC game on Wednesday, what
a long strange trip it was. Concordia continued to light the gym up in
the first half against Augsburg, shooting 60% and only trailing by two
at half. Then Concordia's shooting lights went out in the second half,
and so did their stamina. Concordia shot a frigid 24% in the deciding second
half and lost by 26. Throughout the last four games the gunslinger for
Concordia has been Joe Snowden (Sr., St. Paul, MN), who is averaging 22.8
points over that span. During that stretch he has drained 18 3-pointers
and is shooting 47% from beyond the arc. Snowden was named the MIAC player
of the week for his 3-game tournament performance. He is a transfer student
from NDSU. Concordia was without starting post player Jeff Ubben
(Jr., Moorhead, MN) on Wednesday because of an injury. He is the
teams second leading scorer and leading rebounder, averaging 14 points
and 7 rebounds per game.
St. Olaf (0-2 in the MIAC, 2-4 Overall)
St. Olaf is in the middle of a four game losing
streak, and still searching for their first league win. After starting
the season by winning the Wheaton (IL) tournament with wins over Asbury
College (82-62) and host Wheaton (69-64). The Oles have dropped four
straight, including two in the MIAC. The non-conference losses came at
the hands of UW-River Falls (70-57) and Northwestern (MN) (89-74). That
was followed by defeats to MIAC foes Gustavus (95-64) and St. Mary's (80-70
in OT). The recent loss to St. Mary's was especially heartbreaking because
the Oles saw an 18 point lead disappear in the second half. To make matters
worse they also failed to score a field goal in the five minute overtime
period. St. Olaf is led by a terrific two-some in junior guard Matthew
Hofkins (Neenah, WI) and sophomore forward Mike Ludwig (Blaine, MN). Ludwig
leads the team in scoring with a 17.8 points per game average while Hofkins
is close behind at 17.5. First Year player Matt Schlenker (Rochester,
MN) leads the team in rebounds, averaging 7.3 per game.
The History:
St. Olaf leads the series 46-43.
Last season the two teams split, with each team
winning on the road. In the first game, a 70-67 win at St. Olaf, Jeff Ubben
scored 23 points and the Cobbers survived a last second miss by the Oles
to hold on to the victory. In the second game St. Olaf jumped out to a
10-point halftime lead and coasted in the second half, winning 78-70. Ryan
Olson (Maple Grove, MN) paced the Oles in that game as he hit for 14 points,
and was 4-for-6 from three-point range.
