Sr. St. Paul, MN Puts the Cobbers up early, in Concordia's come from behind victory over St. Mary's 69-68. |
1/15 Concordia Comes from Behind
to Down St. Mary's 69-68.
Concordia trailed for most of the first half and all of the second
before Jeff Ubben (Moorhead, MN) two free throws with :10 remaining gave
the Cobbers the lead, and the victory, over St. Mary's 69-68. Concordia,
who could never get closer than four until the last minute of play, found
unlikely heroes in Robb Flint (Jr., Dilworth) and Nate Ohme (Fr.,
Bloomington, MN) who hit clutch baskets to pull the Cobbers within striking
distance, and set the table for Ubben to push Concordia over the top.
Concordia started quickly at the start of the game when Joe Snowden (Sr., St. Paul, MN) hit two three-point field goals and put the Cobbers in the early going. St. Mary's responded with the inside play of Dusty Ward (So., Lakeville, MN) who finished the game with 14 points and helped forge a 36-26 lead at halftime. In the second half the Cobbers would try and cut into the lead but everytime were turned back by the Cardinals Tory Parsons (Fr., Apple Valley) who had a game-high 19 points. The Cobbers trimmed St. Mary's lead to four points several times throughout the second half and each time Parsons came through with a three-point play. That all changed with just under two minutes to go when Ohme hit a 3-point basket and Flint followed with a penetrating drive that cut the lead to one. After several timeouts and a St. Mary's turnover, the Cobbers finally pulled ahead when Ubben was fouled on a putback.
Concordia shot a sizzling 16-for-26 (.615) from the field in the second half while St. Mary's was 11-for-20 (.550) and 24-for-43 (.558) for the game. The Cobbers were led by Jeff Ubben who had 19 points and 7 rebounds. Joe Snowden contributed 17 points, and Mike Syverson (Jr., Twin Valley, MN) had a solid 11 points and 7 rebounds.
Concordia keeps working up the MIAC ladder and improves to 5-3 in league
play and 8-4 overall. St. Mary's remains in a seven-game losing streak
and falls to 1-7 in the MIAC and 1-10 overall. The Cobbers continue the
MIAC grind when they host St. John's on Wednesday, January 17th at 7:30.

The Headline:
Cobbers Look to Extend Winning Ways
The Preview:
Concordia (4-3 in the MIAC, 7-4 Overall)
Concordia has won four out of their last six games, and are hoping
the streak continues in another key MIAC match-up. The Cobbers are coming
off another overtime victory, this time against a MIAC opponent, a 68-61
victory at Macalester. It was the third overtime game of the season, and
third overtime victory. Joe Snowden (Sr., St. Paul, MN) led the scoring
attack as he hit for a game high 21 points, including six of the team's
nine points in the extra session.
Concordia has an extremely important week ahead. After tonight they
will face St. John's on Wednesday at home and then Bethel in St. Paul on
Saturday. That will conclude a stretch of 7 games in 15 days. After the
Bethel game, the Cobbers will be at the half-way point in their MIAC schedule.
St. Mary’s (1-6 in the MIAC, 1-9 Overall)
St. Mary's is currently stuck in a six-game losing streak. They are
coming off a close 76-74 loss to Carleton. In that game St. Mary's
let an eight-point second half lead crumble, and were outscored down
the stretch 7-4 in the last 1:40 of play. Nick Michaels (So., Dyer, IN)
is the outside-inside threat for the Cardinals. He leads the team in rebounding
and 3-point shooting. St. Mary's leading scorer on the season is Jason
Dzick (Jr., Duluth, MN) who is averaging 13.5 PPG.
