2/3 Concordia Wins Thriller Over
Carleton 79-78.
Joe Snowden's (Sr., St. Paul, MN) free throw to complete a three-point
play with :07 left on the clock finally gave Concordia a lead they would
not relinquish, as they downed Carleton 79-78.
The Cobbers led throughout the most of the game before the Knights rallied to take the lead at 65-64 with 6:01 remaining in the second half. Carleton (5-10, 7-12) pushed it to a five-point advantage with just over one minute to play, but then the Concordia (8-6, 11-7) back court took control. Robb Flint (Jr., Dilworth, MN) drove hard to the basket and was fouled, his two made free throws cut the lead to 76-74. The Cobbers fouled on the inbound play and Steve Knutson was only able to convert on one of his two free throws. After the teams traded turnovers Flint stole the ball and made a lay-up with :22 seconds left and the Cobbers trailing 77-76. Once again Concordia fouled, and once again the Knights made only one of the free throws. That set the stage for Flint's backcourt partner Snowden to step up and win the game. He drove, was fouled by Steve Knutson and made the follow-up free throw to give the Cobbers a 79-78 lead. After calling timeout, Carleton had one last good look at the basket but Scott Christensen's shot at the buzzer hit off the rim and bounded helplessly into the air.
Concordia was led by Snowden who finished with a game-high 23 points.
Robb Flint continued to cause havoc for the opposing team and added
10 points and five assists. Kermit Cooper (Sr., Freeport, BAH) had
an imposing dunk in the first, and scored 15 points on the day.
Concordia remains at home to take on league leading Gustavus on Monday at 7:00.

Concordia vs. Carleton Game Day Preview
The Headline: Concordia Confronts Carleton
The Teams:
Concordia (7-6 in the MIAC, 10-7 Overall)
Concordia is in the middle of a stretch of playing four games in seven
days. Thanks to last week's ice storm, the Cobbers had to make-up the game
against St. Olaf on Thursday. After today, the team will play Gustavus
on Monday and then travel to St. Thomas to take on the Tommies on Wednesday.
The four-game string will determine if the Cobbers can make a final run
at the playoffs. This year the top six teams make MIAC post-season play,
and currently Concordia is sitting in the sixth and final spot. They are
1 1/2 games in front of Macalester, and 1 1/2 games behind St. Thomas for
the fifth slot. In the win over St. Olaf , the Cobber bench outscored St.
Olaf's non-starters 28-11. Trent Hagen finished with a season-high 13 and
Kermit Cooper added 10.
Carleton (5-9 in the MIAC, 7-11 Overall)
Carleton has won three of their last four games. This resurgence can
be traced to the return of first year player Tanner Schiek to the line-up.
In the Knight's 66-65 upset win over Augsburg, Schiek hit the winning lay
up with three seconds left in the game. It was Schieck's first game back
after a broken foot sidelined the first-year center for almost eight weeks.
Ironically, it was in warm-ups against Augsburg in the first game that
Schiek broke his foot. The Knights are led by the tandem of Jeff
Jensen and Steve Nuessle. They are both averaging 14 ppg.

The Key Statistic: Scoring
The two teams are last in the MIAC in scoring average. The Cobbers
are averaging 64 ppg, while the Knights average 67 ppg. Last time the two
teams met, they finished below the averages playing to a 62-61 ending.
The magic number for Concordia is 67. When the Cobbers score over 67 points,
they are 4-0 in league play. When they score under 67, they are a mediocre
3-6. For Carleton, the magic number is 76. The Knights are 4-2 when they
hold their opponents under 76 points, but a horrid 1-7 when their defense
goes south and gives up more than 76.
The Key Match-Up: Joe Snowden - CC vs.
Jeff Jensen - Carl
Today's game will feature a battle of top perimeter players. Joe Snowden,
despite drawing the opponent's best defender, continues to lead the Cobbers
with a 16.9 ppg average. He takes the most shots for Concordia and leads
the team in 3-pont FG%. He remains among the leaders in both categories.
Jensen is Carleton's go-to player, as he was given the opportunity to win
the first game between the two teams in the waning seconds. He missed a
shot with one second left on the clock, and the Cobbers held on for the
62-61 victory.
The History: Carleton leads the Series
21-17.
Carleton has won five of the last seven match-ups. Last year the two
teams split the series with each team winning at home. Concordia won the
first game 67-65 in Moorhead, and Carleton returned the favor winning 65-63
in Northfield. The closest game in the history of the series came in the
inaugural game. In 1933 Carleton eked out a 25-24 win. Frank Cleve was
the Cobbers coach in that historic meeting. Returning lettermen for the
1933-1934 season were Captain Pat Hilde, Shorty Malvey, Earl Moran, Eddie
Romuld, Eddie Dahl, Goody Erickson and Ralph Miller. Frank Cleve has the
distinction of being the only coach in Concordia men's basketball history
to have a winning record.
