2/17 Concordia Finishes Regular
Season in Style, Beats Bethel 81-71.
Concordia scored 49 points in the second half to pull
away from Bethel, and win the last game of the regular season 81-71. The
Cobbers trailed by six at half but shot 50 percent (12-for-24) in the final
half to finish the season at 11-9 in the MIAC and 14-10 overall. Bethel,
who only made 2-of-13 shots from 3-point range in the deciding half, drops
to 14-6 in league play and 16-8 overall.
Bethel started the game by outscoring Concordia 14-2, and the game had all the makings of a repeat of the Royals' 83-47 victory the last time the two teams met. Bethel upped the lead to 13 at the 11:00 minute mark before Concordia went on a 21-14 run to close the half. Joe Snowden's (Sr., St. Paul, MN) buzzer-beater as the first half ended gave the Cobbers the momentum going into halftime, trailing only by six at 38-32.
Trevor Larson hit a 3-pointer to start the second half and push the lead back to double figures. In the next eight minutes Concordia picked themselves off the ground, pounded the offensive glass and outscored Bethel 19-11 to tie the game at 51. The Cobbers grabbed their first lead of the game at 9:44 of the half when Nick Killoran (Sr., Buffalo, MN) stole the ball and fed Joe Snowden for an uncontested layup. Concordia never gave up the lead from that point, and the closest the Royals would get is four points at 73-69 with 0:49 seconds left. Concordia converted six straight free throws, and Kermit Cooper (Sr., Freeport, BAH) put the exclamation mark on the win with a dunk with 0:16 seconds to go to give the Cobbers the 81-71 win.
The duo of Snowden and Cooper were the driving force behind the second half comeback. Snowden finished with 25 points, and regained his shooting touch from the outside throwing down 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Cooper, unstoppable under the basket, hauled in a game-high 16 rebounds and added 20 points. Bethel's Brett Repasky was the leading scorer in the game with 27 points.
Concordia finishes the regular season tied for fifth place with Augsburg, their highest finish since the 1996-97 season. They will travel to St. Thomas on Tuesday for the first round of the MIAC Tournament.

Concordia vs. Bethel Game Day Preview
The Headline: Cobbers Say Farewell to Seniors!
The Teams:
Concordia (10-9 in the MIAC, 13-10 Overall)
Concordia is coming off a 34 -point loss to St. John's on Thursday.
The Cobbers were plagued by inconsistent shooting from the field. They
only scored 21 points in the first half and couldn't dig themselves out
in the second half. The good news is that Concordia will be in the MIAC
playoffs come Tuesday. Their opponent has yet to be named, but could very
well be these same Bethel Royals. Concordia has wrapped up the sixth seed
and will travel to the team that finishes third. Right now Bethel and St.
Thomas are tied for the spot but the Royals hold the tie-breaker over the
Tommies should they finish tied after today. Today is the last regular
season game for the four seniors; Kermit Cooper, Nick Killoran, Joe Snowden
and Stefan Swiat. We would like to take the time to thank these players
for putting in long hours of practice and making a commitment to make Concordia
basketball. Thank you and good luck in the future.
Bethel (14-5 in the MIAC, 16-7 Overall)
Bethel is fighting for third place in the MIAC. They are coming off
a
14-point win over Augsburg. The Royals are led by the two "R"'s Brett
Repasky and Eric Robertson. These two have picked up the slack since the
injury to Andy Gilbert. At the time of his injury Gilbert was third in
the league in scoring. He hurt his wrist in a snow sledding accident.

The Key Statistic: Shooting Percentage
Concordia has been going through a stretch as cold as the weather.
In their loss to St. John's, the Cobbers shot a frigid 37 percent from
the field. Concordia has lost three of their last four and in each of the
three losses has not shot over 44 percent from the field. They have been
even colder from 3-point range where they have been held to 23 percent.
Without the outside game, the Cobbers' inside players aren't able to find
room to operate.
The Key Match-Up: Joe Snowden -CC vs.
Brett Repasky - Beth
This match-up features the two trigger men for each team. When Joe
Snowden is "on" for Concrdia, the Cobbers have a chance in every game.
Case in point: In Concordia's last four games they are 1-4. In the three
losses Snowden has 28 points and is a combined 1-for-18 from 3-point range.
In the lone victory Snowden is 4-for-6 from beyond the arc and scored 25
points. Repasky has filled in very well as the "go to" guy for the
Royals since the injury to Andy Gilbert. Repasky averages 12.3 points per
game and is second on the team in assists.
The History: Bethel Leads the Series
26-16
Bethel has won 6 of the last 7 games in the series. They won the first
game this year 83-47. In that game Concordia scored a season low 15 points
in the first half. They trailed at the break 46-15. They came back in the
second half and scored 32 points to the Royals 37. The longest win streak
for Concordia in the series is seven games from 1993 to 1997. The
first game between the two schools was in 1977 when Bethel won one of the
most exciting games in the series 65-63. Players on the team included Mike
Jones, Bruce Paulson, Dave Glaser, Joel Mittelstaedt, Eric Larsen, Chuck
Gulsvig, Dan Brekke, Steve Johnson, Bob Dale, Mark Hagberg, Craig Flaagan,
Kelby Krabbenhoft, Mark Lynne, and Brent Reichert. The coach of that team
was Sonny Gulsvig. That season was his 23rd and last as head coach of the
Cobbers.
