12/02 Concordia Sweeps Bethel 3-2, Remains on Top of the MIAC.

Mike Gast Sr. Fargo, ND Mike scored two of the team's three goals to help the Cobbers beat Bethel 3-2, and earn the series sweep.

Concordia scored two goals in the first period and never looked back as they betterd Bethel 3-2. Captain Mike Gast (Sr., Fargo, ND) scored two of the three goals, and helped the Cobbers sweep Bethel and remain in first place in the MIAC. Junior Craig Walter (Jr., Grand Forks, ND) opened the scoring when he netted his scored his first goal of the season at 13:13 of the second period. Concordia never trailed after that, as Bethel could only get to within one at 2-1 and then 3-2. The Royals stormed the Cobber net in the third and forced Concordia All-American goaltender Bryan Howard (Sr., Gold River, CA) to make 22 saves in the period. For the game Howard had 41 stops while Bethel goalie Jeff Hall made 24. 

Concordia remains undefeated in MIAC play at 5-0-1 and moves to 5-2-1 overall. Bethel, in second place coming into the weekend, drops to 3-3 in league play and 3-6 overall.

The Cobbers do not play anymore MIAC games until after Christmas and will host two important non-coference games against NCHA opponents next weekend. On Friday Concordia plays host to UW-Stout, and on Saturday UW-River Falls will travel north. River Falls is currently leading the NCHA and Stout is tied for second. Both games start at 7:00.

11/18 Concordia Lets Game Slip Away in 3rd Period, Loses 9-3.
With one minute left to go in the second period, Concordia and UW-Eau Claire were deadlocked in a 3-3 game. Over the next 21 minutes, the Blugolds proceeded to reel off six unanswered goals and walk away with a 9-3 decision. The game featured huge momentum shifts as UW-Eau Claire blasted to a 3-0 lead in the first period only to have Concordia tie the score with three straight goals of their own in the second period. The Cobbers comeback was keyed by Toby Schneider (Jr., Grand Forks, ND) who opened the scoring one minute into the second stanza, and followed up by goals from Andy Vix (Fr., Rochester, MN) and Shawn Rehm (So., Detroit Lakes, MN). UW-Eau Claire scored five goals in the third period including two on the power play. The usually stingy Cobber penalty kill unit gave up four goals on seven attempts, and six of the 12 goals that Concordia conceeded on the wild Wisconsin weeked were on the power play. The Concordia power play was a combined 0 for 8 over the same two-game stretch. The Blugolds held a slight advantage in shots on goal, as they outshot the Cobbers 30-26. 

Concordia returns to MIAC action on December 1-2 when they travel to St. Paul, MN to take on Bethel, in a battle of the top two teams in the conference.

11/17 Concordia  Falls to UW-Stevens Point  3-1.
Concordia fell behind 2-0 in the first and went on to lose 3-1 to UW-Stevens Point in the season's first match-up between the MIAC and NCHA. The Pointers scored two goals on the their first two power plays and the Cobbers countered with a great individual by Andy Vix (Fr., Rochester, MN) to make the score 2-1 after one period. The second period was scoreless as both teams traded chances and both goalies came up with key saves.UW-Stevens Point iced the game in the third period when they scored the final goal of the game at 8:37.

10/29  2000-2001 Hockey Preview.
The Concordia College 2000-2001 men's hockey team will be looking to recreate the magic they found in last year's season. Last year's MIAC Coach of the Year Steve Baumgartner will have a team that has the one key ingredient to repeat the success; goaltending. Returning All-American goalie Bryan Howard (Sr., Gold River, CA) led the MIAC in goals against average and saves percentage and his brilliant shot- blocking ability helped Concordia post a school record 13 wins in the MIAC. He also carried the Cobbers deep into post season play where they won the MIAC tournament and then advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals before finally losing to UW-Superior.

The experience gained along the way will help Concordia take aim at the MIAC title, with the hope of returning to the NCAA playoffs. Besides Howard, the team will return three All-MIAC players from last year, MikeGast (Sr., Fargo, ND), Brady Burgess (Jr., Moorhead, MN) and Brian Nelson (So., Moorhead, MN). The team will have to replace several key defensemen from a year ago, mainly All-American and three time All-MIAC player Rob Gramer (Moorhead, MN) who is now behind the bench serving as an assistant coach. Other players that will be counted on to provide depth will be defensemen Shawn Rehm (So., Detroit Lakes, MN) and former Elk River teammates Andy Crook and Kyle Becklin. The offense will be led by the hard working Gast and the playmaking of Burgess, along with Nelson and Jason DiMatteo (Sr., Anchorage, AK). Newcomer Toby Schneider (Jr., Grand Forks, ND), a transfer from the University of North Dakota, will also be relied upon to add a physical attacking presence to the first line. 

The Cobbers will be tested early, as they open the regular season with a tough road series against St. Mary's before returning home to face St. Olaf. Other highlights in the schedule include a return trip to UW-Superior on January 6th in a rematch of last seasons NCAA quarterfinal series, and a midseason road trip to defending MIAC regular season champion St. Thomas. The Cobbers are hoping that all roads lead to another MIAC playoff berth and then a return engagement in the NCAA playoffs.
