Concordia used the strength of a three-goal second period to down nationally ranked UW-Stevens Point 3-2. The Cobbers ranked 14th in the nation in the latest USCHO poll scored a pair of goals 24 seconds apart to beat the 10th rated Pointers in Stevens Point, Wisc. All three Concordia goals were scored over a span of 3:26.
The win marks the second consecutive year that Concordia (5-1-0) has edged UW-Stevens Point (2-3-0) by a single goal. Last year, the Cobbers scored two goals in the final period to win 4-3.
The Pointers tried to run away with the game before Concordia could even get off the bus. Rory Milcarek scored a goal just two minutes into the game and Stevens Point threatened to widen the lead throughout the opening stanza. Concordia rookie sensation goaltender Tommy Aulik (Fr., Elk River, Minn.) made eight saves in the period to settle the Cobbers down and give them a chance in the final two periods.
The decisive three minutes came midway through the middle period. Andy Vix (Jr., Rochester, Minn.) started the goal barrage by netting his second goal of the season at 7:10. The goal came on the power play. It was the team's fifth power play goal of the season.
The final two Cobber goals came at 10:12 and 10:36. Matt Hansen (So., Fargo, N. Dak) scored his third goal of the year to give Concordia the lead at 2-1, and then Mike Vlasak (Fr., Rochester, Minn.) scored the eventual game-winner just 24 seconds later.
Concordia would hold the Pointers scoreless until a little over six minutes to go in the game when they allowed a power play goal at 13:22. Aulik would hold off a late flurry by Stevens Point, and Concordia would post their first-ever win over a nationally ranked NCHA team on the road. Aulik continues to be the key to the Cobber success as he stopped 24 of the 26 shots he faced. Pointer goalie Ryan Scott made 21saves in the losing effort.
Concordia travels to UW-Eau Claire to take on
the Blugolds tomorrow night at 7:00pm. The Cobbers will return to league
play next weekend when they play at Augsburg on November 22nd and 23rd.
