Betsy Olesen (Fr., Bismarck, N.Dak./Bismarck HS) splits two Gustavus defenders on her way up the field. in Concordia's 1-0 win over the Gusties. |
(Moorhead, Minn.)-- It took almost 100 full minutes to break Concordia's 15 game losing streak against Gustavus, but in the end Morgan Bain's (Fr., Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) goal with four seconds to go in the first overtime put an end to the streak that dated back to 1989. With the 1-0 victory, the Cobbers posted their fifth shutout of the season and pushed their MIAC record to a perfect 2-0.
Coming into the game, Concordia had lost 14 straight games to the Gusties and had only posted four victories in the 25 game series between the two schools. The Cobbers dominated the play from the opening whistle as they were able to break down the Gustavus defense and get quality shots on the Gustavus goal. The Gusties were able to create their chances on the counterattack but were stopped by the goalpost or Cobber goaltender Jamie Savage. Savage finished the game with four saves in picking up her fourth win of the season.
The game remained scoreless in the first half and then through the completion of regulation play. Concordia held the statistical advantage in every offensive category but was unable to break through on the scoreboard. Gustavus netminder Lindsay LaVoie made 15 saves in helping to keep the score deadlocked at 0-0.
The turning point in the game came late in the first overtime when Cobber first-year player Miriam Lombardozzi (Billings, Mont./Billings HS) was tripped by a Gustavus defender 20 yards from the Gustie net. Suzy Grabko (Fr., Fargo, N.Dak./Fargo North HS) hit the ensuing free kick on net with just over 20 seconds to play and LaVoie was able to make a diving stop - but was unable to handle the rebound. In one swift move, Bain was able to erase a 14-game skid and finish the play by poking home the rebound.
The Cobbers outshot Gustavus 25-8 in the game and held a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Concordia will take their perfect MIAC
record on the road when they play at Augsburg on Wednesday, September 24
at 7:30pm. The next Cobber home game will be Wednesday, October 1 at 4:00pm
against defending MIAC champion Macalester.
