Four Concordia Players and Coach Receive MIAC Postseason Honors.

Four Concordia women's soccer players and head coach Dan Weiler earned MIAC postseason honors. Morgan Bain (Fr., Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) and Suzy Grabko (Fargo, N.Dak./Fargo North HS) were named to the MIAC All-Conference Team, while Carmelle Johnson (Jr., Northridge, Calif./Hamilton HS) and Betsy Olesen (Fr., Bismarck, N.Dak./Bismarck HS) were named to the MIAC All-Conference Honorable Mention Team. Weiler was named the MIAC Coach of the Year in only his second season at the helm of the women's program.
The postseason honors complete a record-setting season by the Cobbers. The team set school records in highest conference finish, most conference wins, lowest team goals against average and most shutouts in a season. Concordia finished the year with a 7-3-1 record in MIAC regular season play and qualified for the inaugural conference tournament playoffs. It is the first time in school history that the women's soccer team has qualified for postseason play.
Bain led the Cobbers in scoring during the 2003 season. She finished the year tied for the team lead in overall points with 10 goals and 3 assists for 23 points. The biggest contribution by Bain was her ability to score the "big" goal. Bain led the team in game-winning goals with five. She scored game-winners against Gustavus and Macalester, teams that the Cobbers had not beaten in over 10 years. She ended the conference season by finishing second in the MIAC in goals scored (8), game-winning goals (3) and shots taken (44). She also finished fifth in conference points (18).
Grabko led the team in assists with 13 and was tied for the team lead in overall scoring with 23 points. She finished second in the MIAC in assists (9) and was 12th in the nation in assists per game (0.76 average). She helped lead the Cobber scoring attack to 37 goals, which is the most since the 2000 season. She was named the MIAC Player of the week on September 23 for her two-game performance against Gustavus and Bethel.
Johnson achieved MIAC postseason honors for the second consecutive season. In 2002 she was named to the MIAC All-Conference Team. Johnson was the captain of the defense that set school records for most shutouts and lowest goals against average in a season. The Cobbers posted 10 shutouts during the 2003 campaign and recorded a goals against average of 0.86.
The final member of the quartet was Olesen, who solidified the middle of the field for the Cobbers. She finished the year with only three points but was one of the driving forces behind Concordia's drive to the playoffs. A fierce competitor in the air, Olesen won many head balls around the Cobber goal area that would have led to dangerous chances for the opposing team.
Head Coach Dan Weiler took over the program
in 2002 and has improved the talent level and overall quality of play by
leaps and bounds. The team had never recorded a better than .500 season
in the MIAC and in only his second year, he guided the team to a 7-3-1
mark. He also led Concordia to wins over Gustavus and Macalester. Entering
the season, the Cobbers had not beaten Gustavus in 15 years and Macalester
in 16 seasons. Weiler has amassed a 11-10-1 conference record in his first
two full seasons as head coach.
