Hinderks
Throws a No-Hitter; Cobbers Sweep Macaleter 3-0, 5-1.

Hinderks (Sr., Renville, Minn./R-C-W HS) continues to get stronger
and stronger in every start. On Saturday he turned in another dominating
performance, no-hitting Macalester in the first game of the Cobbers' sweep
over the Scots.
With the 3-0 and 5-1 victories, Concordia runs their winning streak to 12 games, which ties a school record for most consecutive victories. The 1995 Cobbers started the season with 12 straight wins. Concordia is now 11-3 in the MIAC and moves into second place after Gustavus swept league-leading St. Olaf. The Cobbers are now 19-10 overall and are within one win of their third straight 20-win season.
Three days after receiving national pitcher of the week honors, Hinderks proved that it was no fluke. He completely shut down the Scots, as he cruised through seven innings and did not allow a single hit. It is the first no-hitter by a Cobber pitcher since the 1981 season. Hinderks was only two walks away from a perfect game. The only blemishes on his pitching slate were a lead-off walk in the second and a two-out free pass in the sixth. Hinderks was able to overpower the Macalester batters with his fastball and then find the corners of the plate with his wicked slider.
Hinderks has now pitched eight straight complete games and he upped his league-leading win total to seven games. He is currently 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the MIAC. Hinderks has amassed 21 wins in his career as a Cobber. That mark is only one shy of the school record for wins in a career. The school record is 22 wins, which was posted by Howard Berglund in 1984. Hinderks also lowered his overall ERA to under 2.00 for the first time all season. He now owns a 1.98 ERA in his 11 appearances this season.
The Cobbers scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to capture the three-run victory. Brian Schumacher (So., Thompson, N.D./Thompson HS) collected two of his five hits on the day in the first game. He went 2-for-2 and scored two of the three Cobber runs. Luther Kangas (Sr., Vadnais Heights, Minn., White Bear Lake HS) was the only other Concordia player to have multiple hits in the game. Kangas was 2-for-4 and scored the other run for the Cobbers.
In the nightcap, Cobber starter Bryan Romsa (Jr., Great Falls, Mont./Great Falls HS) was able to manufacture outs in critical situations, and clawed his way to a one-run, complete-game victory. He started the game by getting two outs after the Scots had loaded the bases in the top of the first. He also worked out of jams in the second and sixth innings. In the crucial sixth inning, Romsa was able to induce a pitcher-to-shortstop-to-first double play after Macalester had runners on first and second with one out and the Cobbers clinging to a 3-1 lead.
Concordia tacked on two runs in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach and allow Romsa to pitch the night and get his third complete-game of the season. He is now 5-2 on the year, and lowered his ERA to 5.98.
Once again the Cobber offensive attack was spearheaded by Schumacher. He went 3-for-3 in the second game and finished the day a perfect 5-for-5. The biggest blow of the day was his second inning solo home run. The Cobbers added two more runs in the third inning to stake themselves to a 3-0 lead. The lone run of the afternoon for Macalester came off the bat of All-American Joel Brettingen. Brettingen hammered a pitch over the right field fence to cut the Concordia lead to 3-1.
Jim Johnson (Sr., Anoka, Minn./Anoka HS) had another clutch hit for Concordia. His double in the seventh inning set up the final two insurance runs. He finished the game with one hit in two at-bats.
Concordia will take a week off to concentrate
on final exams. The Cobbers will return to action by hosting league-leading
St. Olaf on Saturday, May 1 at 1:00pm.
