Cobbers Move Up 2 Spots From Seed Position, Finish 6th at MIAC Championships.

MIAC Championship Review:
Concordia, who entered the year-end MIAC Championship Tournament seeded eighth, won two key matches in the two-day tournament and finished sixth. Their sixth-place finish helped them move into a tie for seventh place in the final league standings.

The Cobbers handily won their opening round match against Bethel before being bounced from the championship round by perennial champion Gustavus. Concordia then rebounded on the second day to pull off one of the upsets of the tournament. Concordia squeaked out a 5-4 victory over Hamline, who was seeded fifth entering the tournament. The Cobbers then fell 5-4 to St. Olaf in the fifth place match. If Concordia had won that match, they would have leap-frogged all the way into a tie for fifth place in the final MIAC standings.

Leading the way for the Cobbers at the meet were the singles tandem of Ryan Smith (Fr., Grand Forks, N.Dak./Red River) and Paul Tuchscherer (Baxter, Minn., Brainerd HS). Both Smith and Tuchsherer finished with 3-1 records in singles play, losing only their match against Gustavus. In doubles, the #3 doubles team of Eric Giga (Sr., Owatonna, Minn.) and Kevin Wick (Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS) combined to win three of their four matches. They provided the biggest upset of the tournament for the Cobbers. The pair defeated the #3 doubles team from Gustavus 8-2 to give Concordia their only point against the eventual-champion Gusties.

At the number one singles spot for Concordia, Jake Thomas (Jr., Indian Hills, Colo./Conifer HS) went 2-2, and helped the Cobbers to their upset win over Hamline.
