MOORHEAD-- Concordia scored a touchdown in each quarter, held Wartburg to only 211 yards of total offense, and outlasted the Knights 28-14 to win their first playoff game since 1986.

The Cobbers run their season winning streak to 11 games, which ties the longest in school history. Concordia is now 11-0 on the year and will host Occidental (Calif.), who defeated Willamette 28-14, in the second round of the playoffs. Wartburg finishes the season with an 8-3 mark. 

The Cobber defense once again limited their opponent to under 100 yards of rushing and just over 200 total yards for the game. The Knights finished with season-lows in rushing yardage and total offensive yardage. Wartburg was only able to break free for 73 yards in rushing and 211 total yards. 

Concordia racked up 302 yards in total offense - 128 on the ground and 174 through the air. The key statistic for the Cobber offense was their third down conversion rate. Concordia was 10-of-21 on third downs, most in critical situations. Another telling factor was time of possession. The Cobbers held the ball for 37:39, as compared to only 22:21 for the Knights. 

Ed Oehlers led the scoring parade for the Cobbers. He scored two touchdowns, and has now scored at least one touchdown in the last six games. He leads the team with 12 total TD's. Quarterback Brian Schumacher ran for one score and threw for another to account for the other Concordia scores. He hooked up with Andrew Passanante for a 20-yard strike with 26 seconds left in the second quarter, and then bulled his way to a five-yard score midway through the third quarter. 

That offensive trio carried the weight of the statistical load for Concordia. Oehlers had a game-high 63 rushing yards. Schumacher finished the game with 48 rushing yards on 21 carries and went 17-for-26 for 174 yards in the passing department, and Passanante had game-highs in catches and receiving yards. He caught nine passes for 96 yards. With the 96 yards, he broke the school record for receiving yards in a single season, which was held by head coach Terry Horan. Passanante now has 1,133 yards on the season. 

Defensively, Concordia was led by Tanner Radermacher. Radermacher had nine total tackles and one interception. The overpowering linebacking tandem of Josh Dietz and Doug Runke both had five solo tackles and seven total tackles.Travis Almquist had a tremendous second half for the Cobber defensive line. Almquist continually disrupted the Wartburg passing attack and harassed quarterback Reed Hoskins for the entire half. He finished with five total tackles, one tackle for a loss and had two quarterback hurries. On top of all that he was able to bat down two passes from his defensive tackle position.

Wartburg scored on the game's longest play from scrimmage and also on a blocked punt return. At the end of the first quarter, Reed Hoskins found Chris Winter in the middle of the Cobber defense and the pair converted on a 30-yard scoring play. Late in the third quarter, with Concordia leading 21-7, senior Brian McIntire blocked a punt on the Cobber 30-yard line and then picked it up and raced 22 yards for the score. 

Andy Parker was the top Knight rusher. He had 42 yards on 11 carries. Concordia limited 1,000-yard rusher Dan Hammes to only 31 yards on 14 carries. Hoskins was 13-for-30 for 138 yards, and Winter ended the game with seven catches for 90 yards.

Jake Burns collected game-highs in solo tackles and total tackles. He finished with seven solo tackles and 13 total. Nick Weber made the lone interception of the game for the Knights. 

The second round playoff game between Concordia and Occidental will be played on Saturday, November 27 at noon. The location of the game has yet to be determined. The game will either be held in the Fargodome or at Jake Christiansen Stadium.
