Football Gameday Recap SEPTEMBER 4, 2004 at MSU-MOORHEAD - 1:30PM
The game was postponed, and eventually finished, with 10 minutes to go in the fourth quarter due to lightning and severe rain. The victory marks the first time since the 1992 season that the Cobbers have beaten the Dragons at MSU-Moorhead. Concordia has now beaten the Dragons two straight seasons and ups their overall mark in the series to 47-23-12. Concordia (1-0) starting quarterback Brian Schumacher (Jr., Thompson, N.D./Thompson HS) marched the Cobbers down the field on their first two possessions of the game and was able to stake Concordia to an early 10-0 lead. That would be all the offense the Cobber defense would need as they completely shut down the Dragon in the opening half, allowing only 85 total yards through the first 30 minutes of play. Senior captain Josh Dietz (Glencoe, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake HS) led the experienced defense for Concordia, recording 16 tackles on his way to being named the Most Electrifying Defensive Player of the Game. Fellow linebacker Doug Runke (Willmar, Minn./Willmar HS) anchored the Cobbers from the middle, pounding out ten tackles and keeping the Dragons from ever getting an extended drive going until late in the third quarter. Schumacher, who played in all but two series in the game, threw for one touchdown and ran for another as he displayed the poise of his predecessor Ryan Hebrink ('04, Sacred Heart, Minn.) throughout the game. His prime target during the game was senior wideout Andrew Passanante (Sr., Hawley, Minn./Hawley HS). He made several acrobatic catches on key third-down situations and was routinely able to out leap the overmatched MSU-Moorhead (0-2) defensive backs to gain control of the ball. Passanante finished the game seven catches and 168 yards of total receiving yards. He also caught a 35-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter that put Concordia up 17-0. The former MSU-M Dragon was named the game's Most Electrifying Offensive Player of the Game and his touchdown grab was voted the game's Power Surge Play of the Game. Cobber kicker Brian Halverson (Jr., Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) led all scorers with 12 points. He was a perfect 3-for-3 on field goal attempts and connected on all three extra point chances. Halverson connected on field goal attempts from 23, 32 and 22 yards out. The three field goals in one game ties a school record for most field goals made in a single contest. Halverson has also connected on his last eight field goal tries and has not missed since October 4th 2003. The Cobbers will have a two-week rest period before returning to action on September 18. Concordia will open their MIAC season at St. Thomas on the 18th. Their first home game of the year will be on September 25 when they host Carleton in the annual Parent's Weekend game.
