2003 Game Recap - 2003 Box Score Game
2: Concordia College Cobbers (0-0, 1-0) at University of St. Thomas
(0-0, 1-0)
The Starting Lineups:
Cobbers vs. Tommies Preview The Coaches Concordia head coach Terry Horan (Concordia ’89) is in his fourth year as head football coach at Concordia College. Last season he helped the Cobbers to a 7-3 overall mark and a 6-2 MIAC record. In 2002 he was named the MIAC Coach of the Year as he guided the Cobbers to a second place finish. In his first three seasons at the helm, he has compiled a 17-8 conference record and a 19-11 overall mark. ] St. Thomas head coach Don
Roney is starting his seventh season at the helm of the Tommies. He
has complied a 35-17 record in conference play in his first six seasons.
Roney led the Tommies to a 7-3 record in 2001 and third-place MIAC finish.
That followed a 6-4 record in 2000 and 7-3 records in each of his first
two seasons, including a second-place tie in the MIAC race at 7-2 in both
1998 and 1999. Roney was named UST’s 28th head coach in 1998, replacing
five-year head coach Mal Scanlan.
The Marquee Matchup Today's marquee matchup pits the top two linebackers in the league. Concordia's Josh Dietz and St. Thomas' Andrew Ubbelohde. Dietz is a two-time All-MIAC
performer who led the Cobbers in tackles in 2003 and was recently named
the Most Electrifying Defensive Player of the Game in the team's opening
win over NCAA DII MSU-Moorhead. Ubbelohde led the MIAC in tackles last
season and reeked havoc on opposing offenses all year long.
St. Thomas' Andrew Ubbelohde is 28th in solo tackles, Luke Rezac is 9th in sacks and John Kaiser is 29th in tackles for a loss. Team wise, Concordia is 16th
in overall defense (182.0 yds/game) and 21st in scoring defense (7.0pts/game).
St. Thomas is 13th in rushing defense (42.0 yds/game) and 15th (176.0 yds/game)
in overall defense.
About Last Year Last year Concordia scored 28 points in the first half and cruised to a 34-20 win at St. Thomas. Jeremy Hinderks rushed 14 times for 106 yards with touchdown runs of 3, 5 and 42 yards as the Cobbers rolled up 473 yards of offense. The Tommies scored first in the game when Nick Whitehead scampered 21 yards for the game's opening score. The St. Thomas "hands" team fumbled the exchange from center and the extra point attempt failed. Concordia countered by scoring on their first four possessions of the game to take a 28-14 lead with just over five minutes left in the first half. The teams then traded fumbles before the half expired. In the third quarter, St. Thomas scored first as Justin Kostner rumbled across from 3 yards out to make the score 28-20 with 7:41 left in the quarter. The Tommie kicking game once again failed to make the conversion and the Cobbers continued to hold an eight-point lead. The final score of the game came right before the end of the third quarter. Paul Nelson scored the only non-Hinderks TD for the Cobbers with only 33 seconds left on the clock. The Cobber kicking game came down with the St. Thomas extra point flu and missed the point after to keep the final score at 34-20. Defensively, Concordia was
led by Tanner Radermacher who had 10 tackles. Eric Svobodny
broke up three passes in the defensive backfield.

last two games in the series by a combined total of 97-41. The big chunk

points scored is the lowest total for both teams in a single game in the
series...Concordia has shutout the Tommies on six different occasions in
the series, while St. Thomas has blanked the Cobbers only three times.
The last shutout in the series came back in 1978 when the Cobbers won 14-0...The
