Chris Brann enters his fourth season as Carleton's head football coach in 2004. Brann, who took over the Knights' program prior to the 2001 season, led the Knights to their best record in seven years in 2003 as the Knights won their final three games of the season. His recruiting classes have been among the largest in program history and the Knights have produced two All-Americans during Brann's short tenure.

The Cobbers enter the game as the league's top team against the run. The Cobbers, after limiting St. Thomas to only 14 rushing yards, hav only allowed 103 rushing yards in their first two games.

Carleton’s Wade Thompson, a sophomore from Peterson, Minn., is the team’s premiere running back. He ranks third in the MIAC overall statistics with 92.5 yards rushing per game. In Carleton’s first game against Lake Forest he rolled up 152 yards rushing on 25 carries and one touchdown and was named the MIAC Player of the Week. 

As a team, the Cobbers are tied for seventh in scoring defense (5.0 pts. allowed per game), 11th in total defense (181.5 yds/game), 16th in rushing defense (51.5), 19th in pass efficiency defense (75.7) and tied for 20th in turnover margin (2.0).

Carleton also has several individual players among the national statistical leaders. Offensively, running back Wade Thompson is tied for 24th in average yards per kick return (27.7). The Knights have more players in the national scene on the defensive side. Dan Karlgaard and Luke Muellerleile are tied for 11th in passes defended (2.5) and Karlgaard is tied for 12th in interceptions (1.0). Randy Foss and Nick Brokke are tied for 32nd in forced fumbles (0.5), Adam Witt is tied for 34th in sacks (1.3). Finally, Muellerleile, Carleton's punter, ranks 17th in punting average (40.4) 

The Cobbers (3-1, 2-1 MIAC) scored on their final five possessions of the first half. Hebrink tallied 120 yards rushing in the first half alone, while Clark posted 113 rushing yards over the first 30 minutes as the Cobbers posted 335 yards of total offense in leading 35-0 at the break. 

Carleton (0-3, 0-3 MIAC) forced a three-and-out on Concordia's first drive and got the ball back on downs on the Cobbers' second drive. Facing a fourth-and-three from its own 40-yard line midway through the first quarter, Carleton attempted a fake punt, but Concordia' Travis Almquist sniffed out the play, bringing Carleton's Wade Thompson down two yards shy of the first down. 

The Cobbers needed only five plays to score the first touchdown of the game, as Hebrink rushed four times for 35 yards, including the final 12 yards for a score. The Cobber defense forced a three-and-out on Carleton's next drive, and the Cobber offense converted the short field into a Hebrink to Andrew Passanante four-yard scoring toss. Hebrink's 25-yard scamper put the Cobbers on the doorstep. 

Concordia's most sustained drive of the day game early in the second, as the Cobbers embarked on a 12-play, 86-yard drive, capped by Jeremy Hinderks three-yard plunge. From there, two Cobbers interceptions led to touchdowns. Josh Dietz stepped in front of a Ben Cooprider pass at the Concordia 35-yard line, and seven plays later Hebrink and Passanante hooked up from 10 yards out. Eric Preszler picked off Cooprider on Carleton's ensuing drive, giving the Cobbers the ball at the Carleton 30 with 1:14 remaining in the half. Clark rushed for 14 yards and a face mask on Carleton left the Cobbers with first-and-goal from the 11. Clark rushed two more times, the final one from seven yards out to give the Cobbers a comfortable 35-0 halftime lead. 

The Cobbers tacked on a Brian Halverson 40-yard field goal early in the third quarter and a Travis Christensen one-yard run late in the fourth. Wade Thompson's 17-yard burst for Carleton midway through the fourth accounted for the hosts only score. 

The Cobbers outgained Carleton 468-262, converted 7-of-13 third downs and notched three sacks to go with the two interceptions. They held Carleton's Erik Fisher, the sixth-ranked rusher in the nation at more than 170 yards per game, to a meager 26 yards on 16 carries. 

Tanner Radermacher led the Cobbers' defense with eight tackles, seven solo. Matt Martinson tallied two sacks and five total tackles. Dan Karlgaard led the Knight's defensive effort with 13 tackles and Matt Bond and Andrew Wild added 11 tackles each. 

Concordia has won the last 11 games in the series. The last time the Knights won was in 1991...There have only been two shutouts in the series. In 2001 when the Cobbers won 35-0 and in the series opener in 1921 when Concordia beat the Knights 74-0…After the 1921 game, the two teams did not play again until 1983. They have played every year since then…The 74 points scored by the Cobbers in 1921 is the record for the most points scored by a single team in the series…The record for most points scored by both teams in a single game is 76. That occurred in 1994 when Concordia won 55-21.

#14 With a Bullet
Concordia made a huge leap from last week in one of the national polls. Following the Cobbers’ 20-3 stymieing of St. Thomas, the team moved all the way from 23rd to 14th in the latest Don Hansen Football Gazette national poll. 

Life’s Just a Kick in the Grass
Concordia junior kicker Brian Halverson was named the MIAC Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance against St. Thomas. Halverson connected on field goals of 24 and 36 yards in helping Concordia beat St. Thomas 20-3. He also totaled eight points against the Tommies. In the game, Halverson set a new school record for consecutive field goals made with 10. On the year, Halverson has made five field goals in two games and has 20 of the team's 50 points.

Gimme That and That and That
Joining Halverson as MIAC Player of the Week was junior safety Tanner Radermacher. Radermacher was named the Co-MIAC Defensive Player of the Week. Radermacher had two interceptions and recovered a fumbled blocked punt in the Cobbers’ 20-3 win over St. Thomas on Saturday. He also made three tackles on the day. Radermacher was part of a defense that held St. Thomas to only 14 rushing yards and 181 total yards. The Cobber defense has only allowed 103 rushing yards in the team’s first two games.

Even Better Beginnings
The Cobbers are off to a 2-0 start for the second consecutive season. Last year the Cobbers beat MSU-Moorhead and Gustavus before falling to Bethel. The two-game streak at the start of the season matches the longest winning streak at the beginning of the year under current head coach Terry Horan.

The longest winning streak to open a season in the past 20 years is eight games. The 1988 Concordia team went 8-0 at the beginning of the year and finished the season by winning the MIAC title. The best start for a Cobber team under current head coach Terry Horan was last year when they went 2-0.

And If All Else Fails, Bring In the Calvary
Concordia assistant coach Ben Holm played the past two seasons for the Wyoming Calvary of the National Indoor Football League (NIFL).

Holm was a standout defensive lineman for Concordia from 1998-2001. In his senior season he was named to the MIAC All-Conference First Team and was named the team's Most Valuable Defensive Lineman. After graduating in the spring of 2002, he joined the staff as a student assistant in the fall of 2002.

Holm is the defensive line coach for the Cobbers this season.

No, Not That Wade Thompson
Today’s game features a matchup of Wade Thompsons. Concordia’s version of Wade Thompson, a senior from Pelican Rapids, Minn., is a back-up offensive lineman who is part of the Cobbers’ version of the “hogs”. Carleton’s Wade Thompson, a sophomore from Peterson, Minn., is the team’s marquee running back. He ranks third in the MIAC overall statistics with 92.5 yards rushing per game. Welcome Back
If one of the faces on the Carleton sideline looks familiar it’s because Cobber fans are used to seeing him in a maroon and gold uniform and standing under center. Former Cobber All-MIAC quarterback Ethan Pole returns as a first-year assistant coach for the Knights. Pole, who still holds Cobber school records in passing yards, touchdown tosses and completions, was the quarterbacks/running backs coach at William Jewell College (Mo.) last season. Before that he was offensive coordinator at Greenville College (Ill.).

Pressure, What Pressure
Carleton junior cornerback Nick Brokke was named a preseason All-American by the Don Hansen Football Gazette. Not bad for someone who played on a team that went 3-7 in 2003. Last year he led the MIAC in interceptions.
