Gusties (0-2 MIAC, 0-3)
The Starting Lineups:
Cobbers vs. Gusties Stat Breakdown (Overall Games)
Cobbers vs. Gustavus Preview The Coaches Concordia head coach Terry Horan (Concordia ’89) is in his fourth year as head football coach at Concordia College. Last season he helped the Cobbers to a 7-3 overall mark and a 6-2 MIAC record. In 2002 he was named the MIAC Coach of the Year as he guided the Cobbers to a second place finish. In his first three seasons at the helm, he has compiled a 17-8 conference record and a 19-11 overall mark. Jay Schoenebeck is
entering his 11th season as the head coach of the Golden Gusties. He has
compiled a mark of 52-48 overall and 47-41 in the MIAC. Schoenebeck’s squads
have been ranked in the Division III Top 25 in two of the past four seasons
while compiling a record of 26-14 overall and 23-12 in the MIAC.
The Marquee Matchup -
Cobber Blockers vs. Gustavus Linebacker Isaac Sieling
Concordia's offensive line - and blocking backs - will have their hands full with Gustavus senior linebacker Isaac Sieling. Sieling currently leads the MIAC in overall tackles (15.0/MIAC games) and is ranked ninth in DIII in that category for overall games (13.7). In the team's first conference game against Hamline he had 21 tackles. Against St. John's last week he recorded a game-high nine tackles. In Gustavus' last seven games (carrying over from last season), Sieling has made at least 10 tackles in all but one game - last week against St. John's. The last time he did not record at least five tackles in a game was last year against St. Thomas when he was held to only three tackles. National Leaders Concordia players continue to dot the skyline of the NCAA Division III statistical leaders. Brian Halverson has taken over sole possession of first place in field goals per game. Halverson leads the nation with a 2.3 field goal per game average. The only other Cobber among the national leaders in an offensive category is Andrew Passanante, who ranks 15th in punt return avarage per game (15.1). On defense the linebacking tandem of Josh Dietz and Doug Runke continue to be a national force. Dietz is tied for eighth in solo tackles per game (8.3) and tied for 23rd in overall tackles per game (12.3). Runke is tied for 12th in forced fumbles per game (0.67). Finally, defensive lineman Adam Campbell continues to have an outstanding senior season. After posting two sacks in each of the team's first two MIAC games, he is tied for 31st in sackes per game (1.2) As a team, the Cobbers are tied for fourth with DIII powerhouse Mount Union in total defense (173.3 yds per game allowed). They are also eighth in rushing defense (41.3), 11th in scoring defense (8.3 points per game allowed) and tied for 25th in turnover margin (+1.7). Gustavus has only two individual
players among the national leaders. Linebacker Isaac Sieling is
tied for 9th in total tackles (13.7) and Tyler Ringquist is tied
for 12th in forced fumbles (0.67).
About Last Year
The Cobbers received two touchdowns from fullback replacement Ed Oehlers and a third score from Shawn Reile to post the 22-point win. Sophomore kicker Brian Halverson knocked home his first field goal of the season in the second quarter to round out the Cobber scoring. Concordia's defense held the Gustavus offense to only 32 rushing yards and 203 yards of total offense. The Cobbers gained 119 yards on the ground and threw for 151 yards to finish the game with 270 total offensive yards. Josh Dietz was the top Cobber as he was credited for nine solo tackles and assisted on four others. He also had one sack and made two tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Bobby Clark led the Cobbers' ground game, picking up 92 yards on 18 carries. Oehlers finished the game with 13 yards on 7 hard-nosed carries. Senior quarterback Ryan Hebrink was 9-for-20 for 112 yards and 1 touchdown through the air and also ran for 44 yards. Junior wide receiver Andrew Passanante continued to improve as a wide out. He finished the game with 111 receiving yards on 7 receptions. It is the second straight game that Passanante has gained over 100 yards and caught 7 passes. Gustavus was led by wide receiver Tim Nesvig who hauled in 11 passes for 84 yards. On the ground, the Gusties' Drew Stifter carried the bulk of the load. He ran the ball 18 times and gained 62 yards.
Series Background Gustavus leads the overall series between the two teams 40-31-2. Gustavus dominated the early
stages of the series but lately it has been all Concordia. The Cobbers
have won the last two games and nine of the past 12...The longest winning
streak for the Cobbers in the series is six games. That happened twice
- from 1976 through 1981 and then again from 1992 until 1998. The longest
streak for the Gusties is eight games. That string happened from 1946 through
1953...The most points scored by a single team in the series is 48 points.
Concordia put up four dozen points on Gustavus in back-to-back seasons.
In 1994, the Cobbers won 48-0 and then in 1995, the Cobbers won 48-6. The
most points scored by Gustavus in a single game is 47 (1950)...The most
points scored by both teams in a single game is 73. That "defensive showcase"
was back in 1987 when Gustavus prevailed 38-35. In that game the Cobbers
had some player named Terry Horan catching passes in the Gusties' secondary!..There
have been 16 shutouts in the series. Gustavus holds a 9-7 edge in that
category. The last time Concordia was shuotut in the series was back in
1967. Concordia shutout Gustavus back in 1994, but prior to that game it
wasn't until 1970 that Concordia had held the Gusties scoreless...There
have been two 0-0 games in the series, and they occurred in back-to-back
games. In 1932 and '33 the two teams did not score asingle point.

News and Notes
In the first two MIAC games of the year, the Cobber defense has not allowed an opposing running back to gain more than 33 yards in a game. In both games, the Cobbers completely shut down a pair of top conference ball carriers. Against St. Thomas, Concordia held Walter Dosh to only 33 rushing yards. The week before, against Coe College (Iowa), Dosh had racked up 115 yards on the ground. On Saturday, the Cobber run-stopping machine limited Carleton’s premiere back, Wade Thompson, to 11 yards. In the Knights' season opener against Lake Forest (Ill.), Thompson had 152 yards on the ground and was named the MIAC Offensive Player of the Week. And Even Better Beginnings!
The longest winning streak to open a season in the past 20 years is eight games. The 1988 Concordia team went 8-0 at the beginning of the year and finished the season by winning the MIAC title. This is the best start for a Cobber team under current head coach Terry Horan. Top Cobber Starts in the
