Cobbers vs. Johnnies Preview The Coaches Concordia head coach Terry Horan (Concordia ’89) is in his fourth year as head football coach at Concordia College. Last season he helped the Cobbers to a 7-3 overall mark and a 6-2 MIAC record. In 2002 he was named the MIAC Coach of the Year as he guided the Cobbers to a second place finish. In his first three seasons at the helm, he has compiled a 17-8 conference record and a 19-11 overall mark. John Gagliardi (Colorado
College '49) is in his 56th season as a collegiate head coach and 52nd
season at St. John's. The winningest coach all-time in college football
history, Gagliardi currently owns a 419-115-11 (.779) collegiate career
record and a 395-109-10 (.778) record at SJU. Gagliardi’s winning percentage
of .778 is the eighth highest percentage among current Division III head
coaches. Gagliardi’s 56 years of collegiate coaching is the second-most
in college football history, behind former Pacific coach Amos Alonzo Stagg’s
(1890-1946) 57 years.
About Last Year: (From SJU Sports Information Department) The second ranked Saint John's University football team defeated Concordia-Moorhead College 24-12 on Saturday, Oct. 25, at Clemens Stadium in Collegeville, Minn. to give SJU head coach John Gagliardi his 407th career win. The Cobbers jumped on the scoreboard first as sophomore kicker Brian Halverson kicked a 36-yard field goal with 10:38 left in the first quarter. The field goal marked the first time this season that SJU trailed in a game. SJU junior kicker Brandon Keller connected on a 22-yard field goal four minutes later in the quarter to tie the game at 3-3. With 10:42 left in the second quarter, Halverson kicked a 33-yard field goal and the Cobbers led 6-3 for the last time in the game. At 8:21 of the second quarter, senior quarterback Ryan Keating connected with junior wide receiver Lee Clintsman on a 34-yard touchdown pass and SJU led 10-6. With 13 seconds left in the first half, Keating scored on a one-yard quarterback keeper and SJU led 17-6 at intermission. The touchdown capped a 13-play, 69-yard drive. The only scoring of the third quarter came at 2:53 when senior wide receiver Blake Elliott scored on a seven-yard touchdown run and SJU increased its lead to 24-6. Concordia scored its only
touchdown of the game with 8:15 left in the fourth quarter as senior quarterback
Ryan Hebrink scored on an eight-yard run to make the final score 24-12.
Individually, Elliott had 10 catches for 132 yards and one rushing touchdown. Elliott tied an NCAA Division III record with a catch in his 40th consecutive game. Keating was 21-of-34 passing for 238 yards and one touchdown, Clintsman had two catches for 48 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore running back Jake Theis carried the ball 13 times for 62 yards, while senior Josh Nelson carried the ball 18 times for 47 yards. Defensively, SJU was led by sophomore tackle Damien Dumonceaux with 13 total tackles and 1.5 sacks. Freshman linebacker Jamie Steffensmeier had 11 total tackles, while senior linebacker Cam McCambridge collected 10 total tackles. Senior safeties Jeremy Goltz and Cole Deibele each had interceptions for the Johnnies. For Concordia, senior full back Jeremy Hinderks had 16 carries for 93 yards, while senior running back Robert Clark had 13 carries for 81 yards. Clark became the third player in Concordia school history to reach 2,000 career rushing yards. Clark also had five punt returns for 100 yards, including a 58-yard return. Hebrink rushed 17 times for 30 yards and one touchdown and was 5-of-19 passing for 50 yards, two interceptions and three sacks. SJU benefited from good field position as Concordia junior punter Lucas Draxten averaged only 21.8 yards on six punts. Defensively for the Cobbers,
junior linebacker Josh Dietz had 20 total tackles, 11 solo tackles and
a forced fumble. Senior corner back Josh Vickerman had 12 total tackles,
while sophomore safety Tanner Radermacher had an interception and nine
total tackles.
Series Background St. John's leads the overall series between the two teams 36-26-7 St. John's has won the last
eight games between the two teams. They have also won 11 of the last 13.
The last time Concordia beat the Johnnies was in 1990 when they prevailed
30-28 in a game played in the Metrodome. The two times the Johnnies have
not won in the past 13 meetings have resulted in ties. In 1992, the two
schools battled to a 18-18 tie and in 1995 they posted a 14-14 final score.
The 1995 game was played in Collegeville. Both teams finished with a 7-1-1
MIAC record that year with the Cobbers getting the berth into the NCAA
playoffs where they lost to the UW-LaCrosse...The most number of points
scored by a team in a single game is 49. St. John's beat Concordia 49-0
in 1976 on their way to their first NCAA Division III title. The most points
scored in a game by both teams in 73. That was back in 1996 when the Johnnies
edged the Cobbers 39-34...there have been 22 shutouts in the series. The
Cobbers have blanked St. John's 10 times, while the Johnnies have bageled
the Cobbers 12 times. The last time either team posted a shuout was in
1998 when St. John's bettered Concordia 21-0. The last time the Cobbers
held the Johnnies scoreless was 1980 (19-0).
The Marquee Match-Up - Cobber Offensive Line vs. St. John's Defensive Front Four Co-Starring: (CC) Jason Kelly - OG vs (SJU) Steve Danielson Today's match-up pits the Cobber offensive line vs. the vaunted front four of the St. John's defensive line. The Johnnie fearsome foursome has been part of a defense that is second in the MIAC in sacks. Three of the four lineman are in the top four in the league in sacks and the fourth is ninth. The sack attack is led by Jason Good and Kevin McNamara. Both players lead the MIAC with 4.5 sacks on the season. Steve Danielson is currently tied for fourth in the league with 3.5 sack. The last member of the group, Damien Dumonceaux, has 2.5 sacks on the year. The Cobber offensive line has only allowed nine sacks in the team's first five games. In the past two games, the Cobber line has paved the way for the Concordia running game to gain 458 yards. They have also given Cobber quarterback Brian Schumacher (Jr., Thompson, N.D.) the protection he needs to throw for 10 TD’s and over 560 yards. The Cobber hogs are; center David Uselman (Jr., Wadena, Minn./Wadena-Deer Creek HS), guards Jason Kelly (Sr., Fargo, N.D./Shanley HS) and Matt McCallum (So., Buffalo, Minn.) and tackles Nick Didier (Sr., Helena, Mont.) and Ryan Johnson (Jr., St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo HS). The biggest head-to-head match-up on the line will be Kelly vs. Danielson. Kelly, one of the stars of the Concordia offensive line will get the chance to play across from his old high school teammate. The two played for the Shanley Deacons from 1998-2001. In his senior year, Kelly was captain, named to the All-Conference Team and voted Defensive MVP. If Kelly and the rest of the hogs can give Schumacher time to survey the Johnnie secondary, then the Cobber offense will be able to move the ball down the field, as Andrew Passanante and Shawn Reile will have time to free themselves from the glue-like Johnnie secondary.
National Leaders Individually, members of the Cobber offense keep moving up the chart like a smash hit from Ashlee Simpson. Brian Schumacher is now third in passing efficiency (184.8). Andrew Passanante is tied for seventh in receptions per game (7.8) and eighth in receiving yards per game (123.8).He is also 28th in punt return average (12.5). The defense players continue to be rock solid, like a long standing smash by the Dave Matthews Band. Josh Dietz is tied for ninth in solo tackles (7.8). Doug Runke continues to be solid on the forced fumbles chart. He is currently tied for 31st. The newcomer on the national scene for the Cobbers is cornerback Jordan Talge. Talge is tied for 16th in interceptions per gamen (0.8), and tied for 18th in passes defended (1.8). Kicker Brian Halverson slid from the top five in field goals per game. Halverson is now tied for seventh, averaging 1.8 field goals per game. As a team, Concordia is fourth in total defense (196.4) and fifth in rushing defense (52.2). The Cobbers are also tied for ninth in scoring defense (10.4). Finally, the Cobber defense is tied for 23rd in turnover margin (+1.4) and 31st in pass efficiency defense (90.3). The only category the Cobber offense pops up on is scoring offense where the barely made the charts. They are tied for 35th in scoring offense (34.8). SJU is ranked in six categories in this week’s NCAA statistics. The Johnnies are third in total defense at 190.7 ypg, fourth in pass efficiency defense with a 71.4 rating, 16th in scoring offense at 41.8 ppg, seventh in scoring defense at 9.5 ppg, 25th in total offense at 441.5 ypg and 34th in rushing offense at 225.0 ypg. Individually for SJU, freshman quarterback Alex Kofoed is 15th in passing efficiency with a 160.0 rating. Junior punt return specialist Mike Zauhar is 26th in punt returns at 12.6 ypr. Junior defensive tackle Jason Good is 30th in pass sacks at 1.1 spg. Junior running back Corey Weber is 32nd in scoring at 9.6 ppg.
89th Season of Cobber Football The 2004 season marks Concordia’s 89th year of intercollegiate football, and the Cobbers hold an all-time record of 433-246-39 …Football was started at Concordia in 1916 by Mr. A. M. Sattre. The first game for the Cobbers was against Valley City Normal. Valley City won that game 12-0…Concordia has won three national championships and won the MIAC on 17 different occasions. Passanante caught 12 passes for 206 and two touchdowns in the Homecoming victory. He became the first receiver since Concordia head coach Terry Horan to break the 200-yard receiving barrier in a single game. Horan amassed over 200 yards back in 1987 - also against Hamline. During the course of the game, he was also a part of the team's longest play from scrimmage this season when he caught a 62-yard strike from quarterback Brian Schumacher. Passanante has now caught
25 passes for 347 yards and four TD's in the last two games. He currently
leads the MIAC in receptions per game (8.0), receiving yards per game (112.8)
and is tied with teammate Shawn Reile for the lead in receiving
touchdowns (4).
You'll Get Nothing and Like It Concordia's 42-0 shutout win over Hamline was the first Cobber blanking since October 30, 1999 when they beat Macalester 40-0. And It Keeps Getting Better! - The Cobbers are currently ranked 13th in the latest Don Hansen Football Gazette DIII poll. They are also 18th in the AFCA poll and 20th in the D3football.com poll, marking the second straight week that they have cracked the top 25 in all three of the major rankings. Concordia is the only unbeaten team left in the MIAC and their 5-0 start marks the best beginning to a season since the 1997 campaign when they went 6-0 to start the year. The longest winning streak to open a season in the past 20 years is eight games. The 1988 Concordia team went 8-0 at the beginning of the year and finished the season by winning the MIAC title. This is the best start for a Cobber team under current head coach Terry Horan. Top Cobber Starts in the
Past 40 Years:
And Then There Were 19! Concordia is one of only 19 teams in NCAA Division III football that remain unbeaten. 229 teams started the year with dreams of an undefeated season and only a handful remain. The Cobbers are joined by the likes of Linfield, Trinity (TX) and Mount Union. 40-Something or Boldly Going Where No Cobber Team Has Ever Gone Concordia has a chance to score 40 points for the fourth consecutive game against the Johnnies. The Cobbers beat Carleton 40-15, outlasted Gustavus 42-27 and then hammered Hamline 42-0. The last time that Cobber team put up four straight 40-point games was back in 1995. In that stretch, Concordia beat Gustavus 48-6, downed Carleton 41-9, bettered St. Olaf 48-16 and pounded Macalester 49-6. The streak was stopped by St. John's when the Cobbers and Johnnies hooked up for a 14-14 tie. In the '95 season, Concordia and tied St. John's for the MIAC championship. No Cobber football team,
in the program's 89-year history, has ever strung five straight games scoring
40 or more points. (In case you're wondering, the last team to lay 40 or
more points on St. John's was Trinity University (TX). The Tigers beat
the Johnnies 41-34 in the NCAA Division III semifinals on December 14,
2002.
Now That's Tradition
SJU held Bethel sophomore
running back Phil Porta to 80 yards rushing on Saturday, which was far
below his MIAC leading average 205.5 yards per game.
It's K-K-K-Keller the K-K-K-Kicker SJU senior kicker Brandon Keller (Bismarck, N.D./St. Mary’s Central) moved into second place alone on the career list for made field goals with his field against Bethel last Saturday. Keller currently has 21 made field goals in three seasons and passed Mike Schmidt (1980-82). The career record holder is Don Pribyl (1983- 86) with 31 field goals. Keller already holds the career record for made extra points in a career with 202. Keller is fifth all-time with 265 career points scored and needs eight points to pass Rick Bell (1979-82) for fourth all-time in SJU history. Climbing Clintsman SJU senior wide receiver Lee Clintsman (Maplewood, Minn./Hill- Murray) is now seventh all-time in SJU history with 1,898 career yards receiving, sixth all-time with 120 career receptions and tied for eighth with Ryan Murray (1990-93) in career touchdown receptions with 22. Clintsman needs 141 receiving yards to pass Arnold for sixth place in that category. Johnnie Football Magic SJU has currently won 28 consecutive MIAC games, which is an on-going conference record. SJU’s last MIAC loss was Sept. 15, 2001 against St. Olaf. • The Johnnies have also won 24 of their last 25 regular season games. • SJU is now 24-2 all-time against Bethel and 15-0 in Collegeville. • The Johnnies are the winningest NCAA Division III football team overall with a .699 winning percentage and a 513-214-24 all-time record in their 94th season. • SJU was ranked fourth in last week’s D3football.com weekly poll, seventh in Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette NCAA Division III poll and 10th in the AFCA coaches’ poll. • SJU had a 22-game home win streak at Clemens Stadium snapped on Saturday, Sept. 4 in a loss to Wis.-Eau Claire. In its last 103 games at Clemens Stadium, dating back to 1987, SJU has a record of 92-10-1. |
