Cobbers Stymied Again By the Winona Curse. 
WINONA-- Pop quiz. Name the one soccer field in the MIAC that the Concordia men's soccer team has never won on. Hint - it's not perennial powerhouse Macalester or Gustavus. The answer lies firmly planted in the bluffs of southern Minnesota. In the 18 year history of the series between Concordia and St. Mary's, the Cobbers have never won in Winona.

That story line didn't change on Saturday, as St. Mary's received a goal in the final eight minutes of the game to pull out another one-goal victory. The loss marks the seventh defeat at St. Mary's for a Cobber men's soccer team. Of those seven losses, six have been by one goal. It's been such a black-hole for the Cobbers that the last time Concordia even scored a goal at St. Mary's was 1989. 

The loss also drops Concordia's 2004 record to 0-5-1 in the MIAC and 1-7-2 overall. St. Mary's snapped a four-game losing streak and improves to 1-3-0 in conference play and 2-6-2 overall.

The Cobber's best chance of the game came off of a corner kick late in the first half. After playing the ball short, Brandon Root (So., Fargo, N.D./Fargo South HS) was able to dribble the ball towards the St. Mary's goal and get off a point-blank shot that as stopped by Cardinal keeper Tyler Nelson.

For only the second time all season, Concordia outshot their opponent. Against St. Mary's, the Cobbers held a 17-16 edge in overall shots.

Nik Pickett (Jr., Fergus Falls, Minn.) made eight saves in goal for Concordia, while Nelson stopped 12 shots for the Cardinals.

The Cobbers will now enter the toughest stretch of their schedule. Tomorrow they will face regionally-ranked Colorado College at Carleton at 1:00pm. Concordia will then travel to Texas to play in the Trinity University National Invitational Tournament on October 8-9. The Cobbers will play Trinity, the defending national champions, on Friday, October 8 at 7:30pm and then square off against Southwestern (Texas) on Saturday, October 9 at 5:00pm.
