MOORHEAD-- Brandon Root
(So., Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) awoke from a season-long scoring slump
and single-handedly powered Concordia to a 3-3 double overtime tie with
Augsburg in a game played at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex.
The three-goal outburst matches
the team’s total goal output in their first seven conference games. It
is also the team’s highest goal production in a single game this season.
Concordia gains a valuable
point in the conference standings and moves to 0-6-2 in conference play.
The Cobbers are now 1-11-3 overall. The tie snaps a nine-game losing streak.
The six points vaults Root
into the team lead for points in 2004. He now has four goals and two assists
for 10 points. He led the team in scoring last season with eight goals
and four assists.
Root scored the opening goal
of the game at 23:12 when he found himself with the ball after the Augsburg
defense misplayed the ball just outside their penalty area. Root collected
the ball and then hammered home his first goal of the game.
The Auggies then scored two
goals in the next six minutes to grab a 2-1 lead at halftime.
Root responded by tying the
game in the 58th minute when he hit another laser into the top part of
the Augsburg goal. He then completed his hat trick at 67:05 when he took
a pass from Matt Klein (Fr., Fergus Falls, Minn.) and slotted the
ball into the Augsburg goal, which was starting to look like the Pacific
Ocean at that time in the game.
Augsburg scored the final
goal of the game at 74:00. The two teams played the full 20 minutes of
overtime without deciding on a winner.
Augsburg outshot Concordia
15-10 for the game, and also had a 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Cobber goalie Nik Pickett
(Jr., Fergus Falls, Minn.) made seven saves in the game to up his league-leading
total to 58. Lucas Grant made five stops for the Auggies.
Concordia will take a break
from conference play when they host Mayville State on Saturday, October
23 at 1:00pm. The Cobbers will finish of the season by hosting Hamline
on October 26 at 3:30pm and St. John's on October 30 at 1:00pm.
