Slow Burning Fuse Finally Ignites Cobber Offensive Explosion in Win Over Mayville.
MOORHEAD-- Too bad for head coach Joe Larson and the rest of the Concordia team that the season is not a couple of months longer. After stumbling through the growing portion of having a new coach, the Cobbers have found an offensive rhythm and are starting to be rewarded for all their patience and hard work.

Their persistence paid off against non-conference opponent Mayville State, as the Cobbers overcame a one-goal halftime deficit and posted a 4-3 overtime victory. The win snaps a 14-game winless streak for the Cobbers. Concordia has now scored seven goals in the past two games. It is the highest two-game goal output since the beginning of the 2003 season when they scored eight goals in the first two games of the year.

The Cobbers have not lost an overtime game this season and are 1-0-3 in extra session contests. 

Leading the way for the new-found offensive attack is sophomore Brandon Root (Fargo, N.D., Fargo South HS). Root scored two more goals on Saturday, bringing his two-game total to five and his season total to six. Constant Maninga (So., Bagui, RCA/Oak Grove (N.D.) HS), Root's frontrunning mate, scored the other two goals for the Cobbers - including the game winner at the 95-minute mark. Root picked up an assist on both of Maninga's tallies. 

The two forwards combined for 15 of the team's 20 shots in the game. 

Mayville (6-8-0) struck first in the game, scoring the opening goal at 23:41. That would prove to be the only goal in the half, as the Comets took a 1-0 lead into the break.

That's when the offense took over. In the second half, the two teams combined for five goals and 19 shots.

Root tied the game at 53:45 on a penalty kick and then Maninga gave Concordia the lead just 2:33 later when he scored the first of his two goals.

Mayville countered with a pair of their own three-minute goals. Joshua Olsson scored at 68:31, and then Jacob Miller scored his second goal of the game at 71:12 to give the Comets a 3-2 lead.

The lead was short-lived, as Root struck for his second goal of the period 48 seconds later. The teams traded chances in the dying moments of regulation before Maninga struck the game-winner five minutes into the first extra period.

For the game, the Cobbers outshot the Comets 20-16. Cobber keeper Nik Pickett (Jr., Fergus Falls, Minn.) was credited with five saves in the game, while Mayville goalie Brady Horvath turned aside nine shots.

Concordia, who improved to 2-11-3 on the year, will finish off the season with a pair of home games. The Cobbers will host Hamline on Tuesday, October 26 at 3:30pm. They will then play conference rival St. John's on Saturday, October 30 at 1:00pm. Both games
will be held at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex.
