Game 14: vs. Augsburg - October 16, 1:00pm
Cobbers Go Postal to Beat
Augsburg and Clinch MIAC Playoff Berth!
The Cobbers also postmarked their eighth conference win of the season, which breaks a school record for most MIAC victories in a single year. The old record of seven was set last season. Concordia is now 8-1 in the MIAC and 11-3 overall. They are within one win of tying the school record for overall wins in a season and longest consecutive win streak. The 1999 Cobber team won 12 games and recorded a six-game winning streak. Currently, Concordia has won five straight games. Also along the 99-minute route, Morgan Bain (So., Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake, HS) scored her 20th goal on the year, which breaks the school record for most goal in a single season. With the tally she pulls to within two goals of the MIAC record for goals in a conference season. Augsburg (5-3-0 MIAC/7-6-0) got on the scoreboard first when Becky Lewis scored her fifth goal of the season at 12:30. The Cobbers quickly retaliated, as Bain took a feed from frontline mate Kelly Ping (Jr., Bozeman, Mont.) and notched the record-setting goal at 14:00. It was Bain's 45th point of the year, which is one shy of the school record for points in a season. The rest of regulation and most of the first overtime period belonged to Mother Nature. Neither team was able to string passes together in the biting wind and cold. Concordia had a decided 20-7 edge in shots but couldn't come up with the game winner until just before the end of the first overtime period. The game-winner came from Suzy Grabko (So., Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) when she took possession of the ball deep into the Auggie end on the left wing. After making a couple of moves to free herself of the defender, she calmly curled the ball over the top of Augsburg goalie Liz Osterman and into the far side netting of the goal. It was Grabko's sixth goal of the season and first game-winner. She is now second on the team in scoring with 16 points. The Cobbers will take a break from league play and travel to Illinois for two tough Central region contests. On Saturday, October 23 they will play at 2003 national runner-up University of Chicago at 2:00pm. The Maroons are currently ranked 13th in the latest NSCAA Division III poll and second in the Central Region poll. Concordia will then play at Elmhurst (Ill.) on Sunday, October 24 at noon. Dan Weiler's crew will return
to MIAC action on Wednesday, October 27 when they host Hamline in the last
regular-season home game at 3:30pm.
