Two Run-Filled Innings Cost Cobbers Chance at Sweep Over St. Kate's.
ST. PAUL-- Two multiple-run innings against St. Kate's cost the Cobbers a chance to record their second straight conference in as many days. Concordia allowed seven runs in the third and fourth innings in the first game against the Wildcats and had to settle for the split in a series played in St. Paul.

The Cobbers hammered St. Kate's in the second game 9-0 in a game that was stopped after the fifth inning due to the league's eight-run mercy rule. That came after Concordia had let the Wildcats break open a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the third and go on to win 8-1 in the opener of the series.

Concordia has now won four of their last five games and inches their way towards the .500 mark in the MIAC. The Cobbers are now 7-9 in league play and 9-18 overall. St. Kate's splits a conference double dip for the second straight day. They are now 5-9 in the conference and 16-15 overall.

Lindy Sparby backed up her sparkling pitching performance on Wednesday by throwing a one-hitter in the second game. She struck out two on her way to her first complete-game shutout of her collegiate career. The performance was even more remarkable considering that the Wildcats are one of the top three hitting teams in the conference and had only been shutout one other time this season.

Offensively in game two, Concordia struck for five runs in the third inning to break the game wide open. In that inning, the Cobbers scored their five runs on four hits as they sent eight hitters to the plate. They were also the recipients of two costly Wildcat miscues in the field.

For the game, Amanda Johnson was the only Concordia player to record more than one hit in the game as seven different Cobber players hit safely. She went 2-for-2 and drove in a run. Johnson finished the four-game road trip by going 6-for-10. She currently leads the team in hitting with a .375 average.

In the opener, St. Kate's broke on top first when they scored an unearned run off of Cobber starter Gretta Stritesky in the first inning. Concordia came back to match that run in the third inning when Mandy Pearson singled home Kelli Niess.

That is when the bottom fell out for Concordia as they gave up three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and then four more in the fifth. Stritesky pitched the first 4.1 innings and allowed five earned runs and seven hits. Lisa Kott came on in the fifth and pitched the remainder of the game. She gave up three hits and one earned run in 1.2 innings of work.

Pearson finished the first game by going 2-for-3, while Johnson and Jolene Rebertus each collected one hit in the game. Both Johnson and Rebertus have now hit safely in the past seven games. That is the longest hitting streak by any Concordia player this season.

The Cobbers will be put to the test in their next doubleheader. Concordia will host defending national champion, and current MIAC leader, St. Thomas on Saturday, April 23 at 1:00pm at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex. The Cobbers will then hit the road for a series against St. Ben's on Sunday, April 24.
