Big Innings Spell Doom for Cobbers Against Defending National Champion St. Thomas.
MOORHEAD-- Defending NCAA Division III National Champion St. Thomas used the strength of four, multiple-run innings to sweep Concordia 7-0 and 11-1. The second game was stopped after the fifth inning due to the eight-run mercy rule.

The Cobbers gave up a three-run and a four-run inning in the opener and then allowed the Tommies to score five runs in the second inning and six in the fifth inning in the nightcap. The good news for Concordia came in the form of their lone run in the fourth inning of game two, which broke a streak of 32 consecutive innings that the Cobbers had been shutout by the Tommies.

With the two losses, Concordia drops to 7-11 in the conference and 9-20 overall. The Tommies rebound from their loss in the second game of their doubleheader against Gustavus on Wednesday and push their MIAC record to 15-1. The have not lost in the last 42 consecutive road games in conference play. The two victories also help St. Thomas clinch a berth in the MIAC for the second consecutive season. The Tommies are now 27-6 overall.

St. Thomas took control of the series from the opening pitch. They were able to squeeze and steal across three runs in the opening inning. Before the day was through, the Tommies would steal 14 bases, two more than the Cobbers have swiped the entire season.

Concordia starting pitcher Lindy Sparby, who transferred from St. Thomas after her freshman year, settled down after the first inning and shut down the pesky Tommie offensive attack for the next four innings. At one point she had retired 10 straight batters.

That all changed in the top of the sixth inning when St. Thomas sent eight hitters to the plate, scored four runs on three hits and were the beneficiary of two costly Cobber errors.

After being staked to a 3-0 lead in the first frame, St. Thomas starting pitcher Janet Nagle cruised through the sevn innings. She struck out 11, did not allow a walk and only gave up three hits.

In the second game, the Tommies struck five times in the second inning, including a two-run homer by Nagel. St. Thomas tacked on six more in the fifth inning and let pitcher Maria Bye finish the rest.

Like Nagel, Bye was able to keep the Cobber hitters at bay by throwing a steady mix of fastballs and off-speed pitches. She struck out eight in the five innings of work and only allowed two hits.

The offensive highlight for the Cobbers came in the fourth inning when Concordia strung together two hits and then scored on a tough fly ball hit to centerfield by Sparby.

Kelli Niess collected a hit in both games. She was 2-for-5 and stole a base.

The Cobbers will hit the road on Sunday for one of their two remaining MIAC doubleheaders. Concordia will play at St. Ben's at 1:00pm tomorrow before returning home to face Bethel on Saturday, April 30 at 1:00pm in the final series of the season.
