Cobbers Succumb to Sequel
Blues, Lose 5-4 to St. John's in MIAC Quarterfinals.
Concordia lost all three doubles matches but fell one single match short in their attempt to make the MIAC semifinals for the first time since the 2003 season. In the end, the Cobbers fell 5-4 to the Johnnies and will have to settle for trying to win the fifth-place consolation bracket. Head Coach Dave Lester juggled the double lineup for the postseason tournament in order to try and breathe life into the Concordia doubles pairings. He left the #1 doubles team of Jake Thomas and Jordy Kamerling intact but switched the partners of the #2 and #3 teams. Lester's lineup switch didn't pay off as Ryan Smith and Eric Torres lost in the #2 doubles spot 8-2 and the combination of the two winningest singles players on the team, Paul Tuchscherer and William Wischer, were beaten at the #3 doubles slot 8-1. The Cobbers then staged another massive comeback in singles with Thomas, Smith, Wischer and Tuchscherer all winning tight matches. After Torres lost at the #6 singles spot, the match came down to Kamerling and his #2 singles match with Trevor Beach. Kamerling lost the first set 6-3 but then rallied to take the second set 6-3. The momentum appeared to be on Kamerling's side of the net entering the superset tie-breaker, but Beach was able to come up with a gutsy 10-5 win to claim the win and help the Johnnies advance to the semifinals. Concordia will play Hamline
in the semifinals of the fifth-place consolation bracket tomorrow morning
at 8:00am. If the Cobbers defeat the Pipers, they will play for fifth place
at 2:00pm. All the tournament matches are being played at Gustavus.
