Cobbers Rebound From Friday
Heartbreak to Claim 5th Place at MIAC Tournament!
The fifth place finish is one place higher than Concordia finished last season and is the best finish since the 2003 season when the Cobbers finished fourth. The two victories push Concordia's overall record to 12-6 on the year. That is the most victories by a Cobber team since the 1992 team went 12-8 and also finished fifth at the MIAC tournament. Concordia opened the day bright and early by beating Hamline in the fifth-place semifinal match that started at 8:00am. The Cobbers won two of the three doubles spots and then hung on to split the singles competition. The new-found doubles pairing of Paul Tuchscherer and William Wischer started to take flight after stumbling out of the gate on Friday. The tandem won their #3 doubles match 8-3 and then both players claimed singles wins. The other singles victory came at #2 where Jordy Kamerling rebounded from a heartbreaking defeat on Friday to beat Jon Henning 7-5, 6-4. In the fifth-place final match, the Cobbers played out their morning legs and cruised past St. Olaf 7-2. Once again the #1 and #3 doubles teams won handily, but unlike the morning, the Cobber singles crew responded by winning five of the six matches. Tuchscherer completed his successful sophomore season by winning all three singles matches in the tournament. He finished the year 15-3 and is now 26-7 in his first two seasons for the Cobbers. His 15 wins in 2005 is the most by a Concordia player since Mark Roisum won 15 singles bouts in the 1992 campaign. Wischer was the only other Concordia player to post a perfect 3-0 record at the MIAC meet. He completes his first year of collegiate tennis with a 13-5 mark. Kamerling and doubles partner
Jake
Thomas won both of their matches on Saturday. The #1 doubles tandem
for the Cobbers ends the year with an 11-6 record.
