Women's basketball competes in third NCAA tournament

The Concordia women's basketball team competed for the third consecutive year in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Regional play. They were defeated  by Bishop College of Dallas, 73-71, in the second game to end the season with an overall record of 21-7.

While the game against Bishop exchanged leads several times, the Cobbers dominated their first-round tournament game against Pamona-Pitzer College of Claremont, Calif., winning 77-58. It was the second year that Concordia has defeated Pamona-Pitzer in the tournament.

Naomi Wahlin, a senior majoring in elementary education from Missoula Mont. and JoDee Bock a junior majoring in communications and English from Lisbon, N.D., were named to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Conference team and to the NCAA Division III team for the west. In addition, Bock was named the most valuable player of the regional tournament.
 
 

Hockey team encounters a tough season

Although the Concordia hockey team compiled a disappointing 3-11-1 conference record and overall record of 4-21-1, Coach Allen Rice felt that the record does not reflect the outstanding team effort that character-ized the season. Commenting on efforts by the team, Rice noted that the team lost nine games by one goal, including five losses in overtime.

Individual honors for the season went to Andrew Odegaard and Erick Grafstrom, who were named to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honorable mention hockey team. Odegaard is a senior majoring in physical education from Roseau Minn. and Grafstrom is a sophomore.
 

 Gymnasts better school records Two members of the Concordia women's gymnastic team topped the existing school records in balance beam and parallel bars during competition in the recently completed season. Angela Lee, a senior majoring in Spanish and recreation from Billings, Mont., scored an 8.4 on the balance beam during a meet held at Minot (N.D.) State College, Jan.14. Cathy Lindquist, a senior recreation major from Hammond, Wis., scored a 7.7 on the bars in competition at Valley City (N.D.) State College, Dec. 8.

As a team, the Cobbers placed fourth in the four team Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for gymnastics, held in St. Peter, Feb.24 and 25. Concordia scored 116.3 team points while host Gustavus Adolphus won the conference meet with a score of 163.7.
 
 

Three wrestlers in national competition

Three members of the Concordia wrestling team competed in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III national tournament at Binghamton (N.Y.) State on Feb.24 and 25.

Jeff Neil, a junior co-captain majoring in communications and business administration from Crookston, Minn., advanced to second round action in the tournament. Neil, a two-time champion in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Association in the 142-pound division, was defeated in a match he had led by the tournament's eventual third place winner at 142.

Scott Putz, a sophomore majoring in biology from Rockford, Minn., and Thomas Raedeke, a sophomore from Worthington, both dropped their opening round matches. Putz and Raedeke advanced to the wrestle back competition where Putz dominated his opponent 10-2; Raedeke had to withdraw because of illness. As a team, the Cobbers had a 6-7 record for a fourth place finish in the MIAC. Coach Vernon Grinaker commented that the team was hurt by injuries to key team members, particularly Wade Christensen, a co-captain from Frazee, Minn., at 158 pounds; Ryan Haaland, a junior from Clarkfield, Minn., at 167 pounds; and Steve Emerson, a sophomore from Moorhead, at 177 pounds.
 
 

Men's basketball fifth; Moe receives honors

With a 13-13 overall record and conference record of 10-10, the Concordia men's basketball team ended the 1983-84 campaign with a fifth-place finish in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Season highlights for the team included holding their opponents to an average of 61.3 points per game, breaking the 1981-82 mark of 65.8. In a contest against Macalester, the team also set a record of 34 assists in one game. Records and honors for individuals were earned by three Cobbers. Sophomores Daniel Douglas from Detroit Lakes Minn. and Craig Wolhowe from Staples, Minn., were named to the MIAC all-conference honorable mention team. Dale Moe, a senior majoring in communications from Duluth, Minn., was named to the all-conference team. In addition, Moe was also named to the all-District 13 team after leading the MIAC for the second consecutive year in assists. During the year, Moe, a co-captain, set a Concordia record for most career assists with 478.
 
 

 Siverson named head women's basketball coach

Duane Siverson, assistant men's basketball coach, has been named head coach of the Cobber women 5 basketball team beginning  the 1984-85 season. He replaces Marc Langseth, who stepped down after four years in the top slot.

Siverson, who already serves as head coach for the women's golf team, is also the resident director at Bogstad Manor. He is a physical education major from Yankton (S.D.) College. While there, he played basketball for John Eidsness and then came to Concordia when Eidsness was named head coach of the Cobber men's basketball team.

Langseth, who resigned as head coach in order to spend more time with his family and business, compiled a 96-25 record during regular season and tournament play. The record is highlighted by tournament play in the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Division III tournament in 1981 followed by the national championship over Mt. Mercy College of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1982, the same year he was named coach of the year.
