Toms sweep Cobbers, run win streak to 11
St. Thomas opened its 1998 home baseball season today with an impressive
doubleheader sweep of Concordia-Moorhead, 13-1 and 12-1.
The Toms remained in first place in the MIAC at 7-1 and improved to
25-4
overall. They've won 11 in a row and 23 of the last 24 games. Concordia
dropped
to 12-11 overall and 5-5 in the MIAC.
In game one, UST soph Brian Toov (5-1) allowed just one unearned run
and six
hits over six innings. He struck out six, walked none and hit one batter.
Cobber
Guy Clairmont scored on a passed ball in the second to give Concordia
its lone
lead of the day. UST answered with six runs in the bottom of the second,
keyed
by junior Rich Swenson's two-run homer. Junior Matt Faulken had a bases-loaded
double in the fifth to knock in three runs.
In game two, UST junior Chris Olean (4-1)
won his second game in five days. He
fanned eight and walked none and allowed three hits in five innings.
Faulken was
2-for-2 with 2 RBI and Buzz Hannahan was 2-for-2 with two RBI for the
Toms. The
Cobbers averted a shutout in the seventh as Chris Ohm singled and later
scored
on a ground out.
