Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Championships to be Held This Weekend at Gustavus Adolphus College
The MIAC men's tennis championships will be
contested this weekend on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College in St.
Peter, Minn. The host Gusties, who are the defending champions, are
considered the favorites to claim their 11th consecutive league crown.
Coach Steve Wilkinson's squad
compiled a regular season dual match record of 10-0 to run their consecutive
MIAC dual match win streak to 119 (Gustavus has lost only one MIAC dual
match since Steve Wilkinson became the head coach in 1971 and that was
to St. Thomas in 1985. The Gusties are 248-1 in MIAC play under Wilkinson's
direction).
The Gusties return three defending champions
including singles players Jay Bemis and Ben Lipari and the doubles team
of Jay Bemis and Nick Hupton. Bemis was the champion at #4 singles, Lipari
at #3 singles and Bemis and Hupton at #3 doubles. Matt Lundmark also
teamed with Ben Lipari at to win the #2 doubles title last year.
Lundmark is teamed with Ryan Dussault at #1 doubles this season and Lipari
is playing at #3 doubles with Mark Jones. Other top contenders in singles
play include Matt Hering of St. Thomas at #1 singles, Tats Kanenari of
Macalester at #1 singles, and Dan Lattier of
St. Thomas at #3 singles. Top doubles contenders include Mark
Benson and Wade Hinson of Bethel, Matt Hering and Jeff Hahn of St. Thomas
