Steve Montgomery is in his first year as a member of the Cobber baseball coaching staff. Montgomery has been involved in professional baseball for the past 11 years, most recently as a pitcher for the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks - which won the Northern League Championship in 2003.

Montgomery started his professional baseball career with the Kansas City Royals in 1993. He was signed by the Royals as a free agent and played for the Gulf Coast League Royals in his initial season of major league baseball.

After playing in the Royals organization for two years, he played for Johnstown Steel helping guide the independent minor league team to the Frontier League championship in 1995. During his stint with Johnstown Steel, he set a club record for scoreless innings pitched (39) and didn't give up an earned run all season.

Montgomery signed with the Baltimore Orioles in the spring of 1996 and pitched for their AAA affiliate, which went on to win the International League Championship. While playing for the team, he was the recipient of the Jim Palmer Minor League Pitcher of the Year Award and was named the ninth best prospect by the Baseball America Magazine.
 
In the spring of 1998 he was picked up by the Los Angeles Dodgers was part of their organization for two years. He spent two years on the major league roster while rehabilitating a shoulder injury. During that time he accrued one year and 59 days of Major League service time.

After playing in the Dodger organization, he signed on as a starting pitcher with the Boston Red Sox' AAA team - the Pawtucket Red Sox.

Montgomery played for the Pawtuckett Red Sox for two seasons before signing with the FM Redhawks in 2001. During his three seasons with the Redhawks he has set the clubs all-time record for career saves. He finished second in the Northern League in saves in 2001 and third in the league in 2003.
