Cobber hockey drops two against Mankato; hosts Augsburg Jan 19-20

The Cobber hockey team has been struggling defensively all season, and that trend continued last weekend as Concordia was walloped by Mankato State in a two-game weekend series.

Both nights the Mavericks jumped out to early first-period leads. Friday, the Cobbers fell behind early and were not able to recover. Senior John Nikolou was the highlight for Concordia, as he tallied two second-period goals to draw the Cobbers close to Mankato. However, Mankato State slammed the door on any comeback hopes the Cobs had and took an 8-3 victory. Junior Greg Salvevold added the other Concordia goal.

In Saturday night's game, the Mavericks jumped out to a 5-0 lead before the Cobbers could get on the scoreboard. Salvevold, who has been a bright spot for the Cobbers all year, notched his ninth goal of the year to pull the Cobs to 5-1. However, the Division II Mavericks proved to be too much for the young Cobber team.

With the two losses, Concordia dropped to 2-10-1 overall. The Cobbers, 1-5-0 in the MIAC and in ninth place, will jump back into conference play when they host Augsburg in a two-game weekend series. The Cobbers and the Auggies tied earlier this season in the MIAC Thanksgiving Tournament. Augsburg is 5-10-1 overall, and 4-4-0 in the conference, tied for third in the MIAC with Gustavus.

Concordia will play a hot Auggies team which is coming off a sweep of Bethel last weekend.

The first game of the series will start tonight at 7 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center. Saturday's game will start at 2 p.m.
