Fall 1995 Cobber Sports Wrap-Up

 

Cobbers Post Banner Fall Season

As you may know, Concordia has just experienced one of its most successful fall sports seasons ever. Three Cobber teams won MIAC titles; Football, Women's Golf and Men's Soccer. Three teams earned trips to NCAA post season play; Football, Women's Golf and Volleyball. Football coach Jim Christopherson, men's soccer coach Jim Cella and volleyball coach Tim Mosser were all voted by their peers as MIAC Coach of the Year in their sport. And a host of Cobber athletes earned distinction. In addition, our basketball teams are both off to excellent starts. 

Football Wins Share of MIAC Title

The Cobber football team opened the year with a 10-7 win over Moorhead State and then went 7-1-1 in the MIAC to share the title with St. John's. Christopherson's 27th team lost to eventual Division III champion UW-LaCrosse in a NCAA first round game in the Fargodome to end the year 8-2-1.

All-MIAC Football Players included:

-Tim Lowry '96, Sun River, MT, was an AFCA (Kodak) All-American at offensive tackle. He helped the Cobbers lead the MIAC in total offense and rushing.

-Chad Johnson '96, Litchfield, '95 captain, team MVP, linebacker led team with 75 tackles, 6 INTs. -Eli Schuff '97, Billings, MT, '96 captain, halfback led MIAC rushers and had 1145 yards for the season.

-Bryan Boll '96, Crookston, '95 captain, defensive end helped Cobs lead MIAC in defense and was Academic All-MIAC with 3.70 GPA in Education.

-Kyle Odermann '96, Belfield, ND, '95 captain, 3-year starting quarterback, 4,198 career passing yards.

-Jason Caron '97, Bemidji, '96 captain, defensive tackle led team in sacks and had 59 tackles.

-Tory Langemo '97, Litchfield, '96 captain, had 44 receptions for 603 yards.

Earning All-MIAC second team football honors were defensive end Jerid Schoeck, '96, Hancock, safety Shadd Young '96, Fargo, fullback Mike Halvorson, '97, Fargo, center Chad Schwartz '96, Willmar, receiver Shawn McGee '96, Bloomington, guard Jay Boatman '96, Lake Park, and tight end Nate Merseth '97, Frazee.

Women's Golf Undefeated in Fall

Duane Siverson's women's golf team won their 4th MIAC title in five years, won each of their seven fall tournaments and qualified for next spring's NCAA Championship. Cobber golfers took five of the first seven spots in the individual competition, led by Jill Carlin '98, Fosston, who won the MIAC title with a 170 total and her second All-MIAC award.

Also starring for the Cobbers was Kari Walrath '96, Watertown, SD, who was second at the MIAC and earned her 4th All-MIAC award. Kristen Hanson '99, Fosston, placed 3rd at the MIAC meet, helping the Cobbers win by 51 strokes.

Women's Golf Cont.

Christine Lundbohm '96, Roseau, was 6th at the MIAC meet, earning a second All-MIAC honor. She was also named Academic All-MIAC with a 3.39 GPA in Health/Physical Education.

Sarah Penfield '97, Staples, was 7th at the MIAC, her third time on the All-MIAC team.

Men's Soccer Wins MIAC Title

The men's soccer team won a share of Concordia's first MIAC soccer title with an 8-2 MIAC record, 12-4 overall. Fourth year coach Jim Cella earned his second MIAC Coach of the Year award.

Honored men's soccer players included Peter Curry '96, Plymouth, who was named MIAC Player of the Year and 1st team All-Region. He was 3-times All-MIAC. His 112 points is a Cobber career scoring record. Curry was also named Academic All-MIAC with a 3.2 GPA in Economics.

Brian Mahan '96, Fargo, was three-times All-MIAC, a 1995 All-Midwest Region 2nd team selection, and holds the school's career assist record at 38. Mike Hashbarger '97, Fargo, ND earned his third All-MIAC award as a defender. Todd Hashbarger '98, Fargo, ND was an All-MIAC forward and 1st team All-Region with eight goals and ten assists. Jamie Johnson '97, Andover, scored four goals and six assists as an All-MIAC midfielder.

Volleyball 27-8, Gets NCAA Bid

The volleyball team, under third-year coach Tim Mosser, posted a 27-8 season, a best-ever second place finish in the MIAC, and advanced to the NCAA Volleyball playoffs for the first time in school history. Despite losing in the NCAA's first round, Mosser's team should be good next year as well. They had one just one senior and no juniors.

Leading the way was Jodi Tulibaski '96, Pennock, who repeated as an All-MIAC hitter and was also named All-Region. Marsha Suko '98, West Fargo, was named All-MIAC as setter and was also All-Region. Angle Carlin '98, Fosston, repeated as an All-MIAC hitter.

Men's Golf Takes 4th in MIAC

The Cobber men's golf team placed 4th in the 11 team MIAC Tournament, led by Mike Simonich '99, Mora. Simonich shot a 152 total to record a 6th place finish individually at the MIAC. The Cobbers were led most of the year by another freshman, Brandon Riddering, '99, Maple Grove.

Women's Soccer Led by Tohm

Concordia's women's soccer team posted a 4-10-3 record, led by All-Region junior Angie Tohm from Blaine. Tohm, who also earned a second All-MIAC award, scored 27 points on 10 goals and 7 assists for the Cobbers. Senior defender Krysta Morgenthaler earned her third consecutive Academic All-MIAC award. Morgenthaler is a 4 year starter and has a 3.88 GPA in biology.

Greeley, Keating Top Cross Country

Although the Cobber cross country teams finished back in the pack most of the year, two Cobber runners were consistent leaders. Brenda Greeley '96, Coon Rapids, led the women's team all year and finished 30th at the MIAC. Bill Keating '97, Fargo, led the men and finished 44th at the MIAC Meet.

Six Inducted to Hall of Fame

Concordia inducted six new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame at a banquet following the homecoming football game.

Buel Brodin, class of '43, earned 12 varsity letters and was an All-MIAC fullback on the 6-0-1 1942 football team, Concordia's first undefeated football team.

Edwin "Sonny" Gulsvig, class of '50, was a three sport Cobber athlete who returned to Concordia in 1955 to begin a 36-year teaching and coaching career that included 23 years as head basketball coach, 20 years coaching baseball, 36 years assisting in football and 16 years as sports information director.

Dr. Les Torgerson, class of '62, was a two-time All-MIAC guard for the Cobber basketball team, teaming with Arlo Brunsberg to form the league's best backcourt in '60-61 and '61-62.

Dr. Howard Berglund, class of '84, was an All-American in both baseball and track and a starting quarterback for the Cobber football team.

JoDee Bock, class of '85, was a two-time Cobber women's basketball All-American who helped Concordia win 86 games, two MIAC titles, and the 1982 national championship.

The late Ivan Larson, an Honorary Inductee, served as the college's Faculty Athletic Representative from 1950 to 1974. 

Basketball Teams Start Well

The Cobber women's basketball team is off to a 5-1 start. The men's team, which took second in the MIAC last year is 4-2, 2-1 in the MIAC.

The Cobber women are being directed this year by new coach Kathy Wall. Wall succeeded Bob Kohler who asked to be relieved of the women's head coaching duties for medical reasons. Kohler remains on the Cobber staff and faculty. Wall is a 1993 Cobber graduate from Fargo. She spent the past two seasons earning her Masters degree in Athletic Administration at NDSU. She also served as an assistant basketball coach there as the Bison women won two national championships. Wall joined the Cobber staff in September as a faculty member, head women's tennis coach and senior women's administrator in the department.

The Cobber men's basketball team, which finished second in the MIAC last year, notched an impressive early season win over St. Thomas here December 6th. The 76-53 victory ended a 29 game MIAC win streak by the Tommies.
