The Cobbers can still get a share of the title with wins in their last two games and a loss by 6-1 Augburg to either Macalester this week (unlikely) or Nov. 7 at the Metrodome against Bethel (very possible). (See Balance of MIAC schedule) See box score of Hamline win over Gustavus. Hamline's preseason Preview:
Quality leadership in 1997 will be provided by four senior co-captains: Jon Young at quarterback; Chad Stelzig (second-team All-MIAC in '96) on the offensive line; Neil Smith (second-team All-MIAC in both '95 and '96) at defensive tackle; and Nate Manderfeld at safety. These captains have a great supporting cast in the likes of wide receiver Ben Tressel and center Craig Mueller, both three-year letterwinners, and linebacker Dan Benning, a ferocious hitter on the defensive side of the ball. Hamline again faces an extremely demanding early season schedule with 1996's top three conference finishers as the Pipers' first three conference opponents. Hamline returns four starters on offense (21.0 ppg/312.0 ypg) and seven on defense (21.44 ppg/320.67 ypg). Head coach Dick Tressel, entering his 20th season at the helm, thinks that besides Neil Smith and his two sons, Ben and Luke Tressel, that the rest of the league "won't know who anybody is" on the Hamline roster. With that, Tressel knows that people will never pick Hamline, but he warns "never bet your whole house against them." |
