Women's tennis team places in state tournament
Two statewide tournaments rounded out the season for Concordia's women's tennis team.
The team took a 12-3 win-loss record into the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's (MIACW) Division tourney, held April 30 and May 1 at St. Thomas College, St. Paul, Minn. They earned a third-place team finish in the tourney by defeating St. Thomas 6-3 in the first round, losing to St. Olaf College 0-9 and shutting out Macalester College 9-0.
One week later, the Cobbers were one of eight teams invited to play at St. Thomas for the Minnesota Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (MAIAW) state tournament. Concordia's No. I doubles pair, Ann Schmidt ('82) from Moorhead and Naomi Paulsen ('82) from Northfield, Minn., won the fifth-place consolation medal, hut did not qualify for regional competition.
An individual standout for the Cobbers was freshman Karen Brunsdale, Mahnomen, Minn., who finished the regular season with an undefeated 8-0 record as Concordia's No.6 singles player. She also paired up with freshman Kelly Oevermann from Willmar, Minn., to compile a 9-0 record at No.3 doubles.
