Bale earns all.America status
All-America honors have been awarded to Julie Bale ('82), Moorhead, for her superior performance in the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) Division III track and field meet held May 20-22 at Bloomsburg, Pa. Bale earned the all-America status by finishing sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of :26:36. In addition, she took seventh in the 100-meter dash and ninth in the long jump. During the preliminaries Bale recorded personal bests in each of these events.
On her way to the nationals, Bale placed first, second and third respectively in the 100-meter, the long jump and the 200-meter at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) meet held at Macalester College, St. Paul, Minn., May 6-8. Overall the women's team finished a close second behind St. Thomas.
She was also a member of two MIAC-winning relay teams, the 400-meter team, which qualified for nationals, and the 800-meter medley team. Other members of the 400-meter team were Julie Carew ('82) from Wadena, Minn.; junior Margo Holm from Moorhead; and Ruth Reimnitz ('82) from Bismarck, N.D. At nationals, a dropped baton prevented the relay team from placing.
Junior Kristine Freeman, Duluth, Minn., won the shot put event at the MIAC meet to qualify for nationals, where she finished eighth with a toss of 40'-l ¼".
Bale is the second Cobber in two years to gain all-America honors at
the AIAW meet. Last year Linda Iverson ('8]), Fairview, Mont., took fourth
place in the javelin.
