Concordia-Moorhead Men's Basketball 1979-80 Season

Running Cobber Basketball 1979-80

No one knew what to expect from the men's basketball team as they entered the 1979-80 season. All five starters from the previous year had graduated and only one player with the amount of game experience to be competitive in college basketball returned. In their first four games, the Cobbers were defeated quite easily by their opponents. Their fifth game of the season was against Moorhead State, a team that would later go to the NAIA National Tournament. In this game, the Cobbers showed possibilities of future greatness as they battled Moorhead Slate down to the wire before losing 80-77. The team went on to lose eight more games before finally demolishing St. Thomas 98-74.

The Cobbers finished the season wth 6 wins, one of which came about via a forfeit for use of an ineligible player. Despite the disappointing season, the team finished on a very high point, by defeating conference champion Augsburg. Things can only get better due to the fact that only one starter graduated and plenty of good, young players will fill the gaps.

Junior Varsity
The junior varsity basketball team won almost two-thirds of their games, finishing the season with an 11-6 record. The four freshmen that dressed with the varsity squad were also the JV team's leading scorers: Garrett Byrne, 14.5; Jon Eide, 13.2; kyle Hansen, 11.0; and Dave Munson, 9.4. The newcomers showed strong potential to rebuild the running Cobbers.
