Askegaard and Oppegard lead Men cagers
Coached by John Eidsness, the Cobber men's basketball squad ended its 1981 season with a 9-15 overall record and an 8-10 record in the MIAC conference. As a team, the Cobbers attained 50 percent of attempted field goals and 70 percent of attempted free throws. Cobber game points averaged 72.2 compared with opponents' 74.0 average. The team set a school record in their game against St. Mary's, achieving 61.7 percent of their attempted field goals.
Team leaders were Andrew Askegaard of Barnesville, Minn., and Claude Oppegard of Fargo, N.D. Askegaard, a Cobber forward, led the team in both scoring and rebounding. He scored a season total of 310 points (12.9 point average per game) and captured 175 rebounds (7.3 rebound average per game). He was voted 1981 Cobber most valuable player and earned a spot on the all-MIAC basketball team.
Oppegard, the team's only senior, was voted 1981 honorary captain and the most inspirational player. Oppegard scored 230 points on the season for a 9.6 point per game average. He also gathered 108 rebounds (4.5 rebound average per game).
Concordia guard Greg Strand from Portland, N.D., earned honorable mention
to the 11-man all-MIAC team.
