Men's Basketball-Augsburg 109, Concordia-Moorhead 89
MINNEAPOLIS - Augsburg College claimed at least a share of the Minnesota
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball championship Wednesday
night, cruising past Concordia-Moorhead 109-89 at Augsburg's Si Melby
Hall.
The Auggies, which finished its regular season 22-2 overall and 18-2
in the
MIAC, claimed the MIAC championship for the first time since the 1984-85
season and the 13th men's basketball title in school history.
Concordia-Moorhead falls to 3-20 overall and 2-17 in the MIAC.
Gustavus, which beat Macalester 73-54 Wednesday night to improve to
21-2
overall and 17-2 in the MIAC, can claim a share of the regular-season
title
with Augsburg if the Gusties beat St. John's in its regular-season
finale
on Saturday at Collegeville. Concordia closes its season hosting Bethel
on
Saturday.
Devean George (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret HS) led
the
Auggies with 27 points and seven rebounds, pacing four Auggies in double
figures. Kevin Van Rossum (So., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) had 19 points,
including five three-pointers, while Micah Watkins (Jr., Minneapolis,
Minn./Minnehaha Academy) had a season-high 13 points and Neil Swanson
(Sr.,
Osseo, Minn.) scored 11 points.
Concordia-Moorhead was paced by Brian Kesselring (Jr., Fargo, N.D.),
who
scored a game-high 34 points with nine rebounds. James Gillhouse (Jr.,
Ronan, Mont.) had 20 points and seven rebounds, and Nate Malchow (So.,
Aberdeen, S.D.) had 14 points.
Augsburg trailed 15-10 early, but rallied with to take its first lead,
25-24, at the 10:23 mark of the first half. The Auggies pulled away
from
there with a 9-2 run before halftime.Concordia trailed by just 9 at
66-57 with
15:30 left in the game before the Auggies went on a 17-0 run
over the next 4 minutes.
