St. Peter, Minnesota --The Gustavus men's basketball team hosted
conference opponent Concordia-Moorhead at Gus Young Court Wednesday evening.
The game began very tight as there were four first-half ties until
Gustavus broke away at the 5:15 mark on two
Aaron Grove (SR, Long Prarie) free throws to make the score 22-20.
Gustavus would not relinquish the lead the remainder of the half
and went into the locker room with a 33-25 lead.
Gustavus broke the game open to start the second half and opened on a 16-2 run to extend their lead to 22 points at 49-27 with 15:20 remaining in the game. The Gusties would hold off the Cobbers and claimed a 78-54 victory.
Mark McDonnell (JR, Minnesota Lake) led all scorers with 21 points on six-for-twelve from the floor and a sparkling eight-for-eight from the charity stripe. Luke Schmidt (JR, New Ulm) racked up 17 points and eight rebounds in the winning effort.
The win moves the Gusties to 2-0 in the MIAC and 5-0 overall. Concordia is 1-5, 0-2 in the MIAC. Concordia hosts Carleton Saturday, Dec. 13 at 3:00.
The Gusties next game will be Monday, December 22nd when they travel to the Twin Cities to take on Concordia-St. Paul at 7:00 pm.
