The Cobbers managed to run their conference record to 5-1 after winning their fourth straight game on Wednesday night in an 84-73 win over Augsburg. The Cobbers are now perfect for 1996.
At one point, Concordia led by 25 points, but the lead slowly dwindled away in the second half. The Cobs held a lead between nine and 13 points throughout most of the half, but were outscored 37-35 in the second half. Augsburg's Jim South's game-high 24 points cut the Concordia lead to 77-72 with 1:04 left in the game.
The Cobbers managed five free throws down the stretch to help preserve the victory. Junior Daimen Crump led the way with 19 points while Jason Sorenson, senior, added 17 points along with six steals.
On Monday night the Cobbers managed an 84-77 home victory against Carleton. Sorenson hit five three-pointers in the first half to help Concordia take a 46-32 lead at the intermission. Crump scored all of his 14 points in the second half to give the Cobs a 68-48 lead with 11:54 remaining in the game.
Then those mistakes allowed Carleton get back into the game and cut the Cobbers' 18-point lead down to 81-74 with 37 seconds left in the game.
Carleton, which has assembled a talented group of first-year students, was led in scoring by one of them, Josh Wilhelm, with 27 points.
The Cobs made only three of their last nine free throws in the last 71 seconds, but in the end, Sorenson's 17 points along with senior Kenny Nelson tossing in 16 were enough to help preserve the win.
The Johnnies were up next for the Cobbers on Saturday night, and once again the Cobbers won an exciting contest by a score of 68-67.
Concordia held an 11-point lead in the second half only to see it dwindle away due to the shooting of Corey Jackson who played a big part in ending the Cobber season last year.
Jackson hit three three-pointers in the closing moments of the game. However, the Cobbers' Dean, a junior, drove for a lay-up to give the Cobs a 67-63 lead. Jackson came right down the floor and hit a big three to shave the margin to one point.
The Johnnies called a time out and fouled Sorenson as the ball passed midcourt.
Sorenson missed the front end of the one-and-one and St. John's Josh Cherry managed to shoot a twelve-footer at the buzzer only to have it blocked by Kenny Nelson, the Cobbers' senior center, to help preserve the win.
Daimen Crump once again led Concordia with 29 points while Bryan Christianson pulled down seven boards.
The Cobbers took their show on the road to Jamestown Jan. 2.
Jamestown had played and defeated Moorhead State in addition to losing to North Dakota State by two points earlier in the season. The Cobbers knew they had a tough fight ahead of them.
The Cobbers had to go to overtime, but still managed to come away with an 87-83 win.
Crump, who was named the MIAC's Player of the Week, once again led the way for the Cobs by pouring in 23 points. Nelson added 17 points of his own and Dean helped the Concordia cause with 13.
The Cobbers have gone 4-0 since the new year and are in second place in the MIAC trailing only the undefeated Gusties of Gustavus.
Concordia will be at home tomorrow to take on the Macalester Scots. Next week they will take to the road to play St. Mary's Monday and St. Olaf Wednesday.
