The Cobber wrestling team won its first dual match of the season
Wednesday against Fergus Falls Community College. The Cobber team
overpowered the Spartans with a decisive 45-3 victory. There were
three forfeits in the match on the Spartan team but from the aggresiveness
and work the Cobber wrestlers contained, Fergus was simply outwrestled.
Leon Nielson, Cobber senior captain, stated "we've been working
harder every practice and I feel the team has taken the next step
toward a winning second half of the season."
The Cobber wrestlers showed some of this winning spirit last
weekend as they ventured over to the Dragon's Den on Moorhead
State University's campus Saturday. They competed with 13 other
teams in the North Country Tournament. A few of the teams who
participated in the tournament included MIAC champion Augsburg
and Division II champion Mankato State.
At 134 lbs. captain Kevin Jackson (6-5) won his first match
in a grueling 3-1 decision. Jackson went on to a 2-2 record for
the tournament, giving his team six points.
Concordia's budding star, first-year student Nathan Reiff,
finished with a 3-2 record for the tournament, beating Itasca
Community College's Peterson in his second match. Reiff fought
a terrific match against Ranlum (UMD) winning 7-6 in the final
seconds of the third period. Reiff's record is now 11-8 overall
which leads the Cobber team in wins.
Not far behind is Nielson, who fought a tough tournament losing
to Weathers (Mankato) 0-7 and King (Dickinson State) 4-11. He
wrestled back tough however winning his final two matches 9-7
and 4-1. This was a prime example of the dedication and spirit
of the Cobber wrestling team.
The team finished eleventh overall in the tournament with 24.5
points. The team has been consistently improving throughout the
season and the second half looks bright.
They have three more dual meets and four more tournaments before
the MIAC championship tournament. At this rate, the Cobbers could
find themselves competing for some individual spots in the MIAC
final matches.
The Cobbers will travel to Wisconsin for the University of Mary tournament this Saturday. Their next home match will be the MIAC duals at 6 p.m. on Jan 26-27.
