Despite a seven point effort by Jeff Corkish, the Cobber hockey team was defeated by St. Thomas in a weekend sweep.
Corkish, who figured on every goal the Cobbers scored over the weekend, got the Cobbers on the board first in the opener Friday night. His unassisted goal at 7:21 of the first period gave the Cobs a short lived 1-0 lead. The Tommies would answer back just 40 seconds later with a goal to tie the game at 1-1.
After St. Thomas took the lead at 2-1, John Kosobud drew the Cobbers even again with a goal at 15:01. Corkish and Todd Hashbarger assisted on the goal. St. Thomas's Marshall gave the Tommies a 3-2 lead as the team went in to the first intermission.
St. Thomas picked up where they left off in the second period, notching a goal just 55 seconds into the second stanza. Before the Tommies were done in the period, they would tally seven goals to take a 10-4 lead into the final period.
Hashbarger and Corkish scored second period goals for the Cobbers. The Tommies kept up the offense in the final period,, however, scoring three more times. Mike Simonich added a goal for the Cobbers, and when the smoke cleared the final score was 13-5.
Saturday's rematch was not much better for Concordia, as the Tommies used another big second period to breeze past the Cobbers 9-2.
Concordia played tough in the first period, as the score was 0-0 until the Tommies scored a late goal. The second period again was a thorn in the side of Concordia. The Tommies exploded for five goals to take a commanding 6-2 lead. Ryan Kortan and Todd Hashbarger notched goals for the Cobbers in the frame. Three more Tommie goals in the third period sealed the fate of the Cobbers.
The Cobs will try to end their losing ways as they travel to Hamline for a weekend series Friday and Saturday.
