Cncordia' wrestlers finished up their regular season last Tuesday travelling to Valley City State University. VCSU prevailed in the match with a 30-6 rout over the Cobbers. Sophomore Shawn Nicholas came out a winner of his match, defeating Ryan Dyar 2-1. Sophomore Colby Marich won his match by decision 6-2 in the third period.
Last weekend Concordia travelled to Northfield to wrestle St. Olaf in a dual and compete in the Carleton invitational. On Friday night the Oles just squeaked by our boys with a 19-15 victory. Concordia was down 6-19 when first-year student Nathan Reiff, at 177 pounds, tore into his opponent winning 7-3. This picked up the tempo of the meet and both junior Rob Wilcox and senior Dean Nielson went on to win their matches. This was Concordia's only loss to Olaf this season.
On Saturday at the Carleton College tournament, Nicholas topped off his Friday night with a second place finish. Nicholas pinned his opponent from Carleton in his first round match at 3:20. He fought his way through the second and third round getting a fall at :34 and a 6-4 decision. Nicholas has picked up the tempo of his wrestling and is looking very solid going into the MIAC tournament.
Nielson also had a good tournament, placing fifth. He had three pins and a decision which put his senior winning total at over twenty matches. Both junior Kevin Jackson and Marich won two matches with Marich placing seventh.
The MIAC championship will be held on Feb. 24 at Carleton College. Look for Nielson, Nicholas and Reiff to be strong contenders in their weight classes.
Concordia finished their season with a 4-9 team record coming off their season stronger than ever.
The winners of the MIAC tournament will advance to the NCAA National Championship tournament which will be held at Augsburg College on March 2-3.
