The Concordia hockey team ran its losing streak to 13 games last weekend as they dropped two games against St. Mary's.
The inexperience of the Cobbers showed in Friday night's affair. The Cardinals capitalized on the cobs' mistakes and jumped ahead early, cruising to an 8-2 win. The Cobbers also played without leading scorer junior Greg Salvevold.
St. Mary's was up 2-0 after only three minutes, but junior Jeff Corkish pulled the Cobbers to within one with his power play goal. Sophomore Todd Hashbarger and junior Ryan Johnson assisted on Corkish's goal. The Cardinals responded by scoring the next four goals to take a 6-1 lead early in the third period.
Corkish notched his second goal of game at 7:51 of the final period. It was unassisted. The Cardinals would notch two more goals in the third period for the 8-2 victory. St. Mary's Chris Lamb stopped 21 Concordia shots, while Pete Hamilton, sophomore, made 36 saves for the Cobbers.
Saturday's game proved to be better, but the Cobbers still couldn't pull out a victory. The Cobs played well early, but couldn't hold off the Cardinals and lost 7-5.
The Cobbers jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 7:36 of the opening period when Johnson tallied a power play goal. Hashbarger and Corkish were credited with assists. Corkish then put the Cobbers up 2-0 when he tallied his third goal of the weekend at 18:17 of the first period. Johnson and first-year student Ryan Kortan assisted. The Cardinals got on the board just over a minute later, and the teams went in to the lockers with the Cobbers leading 2-1.
Corkish put Concordia up 3-1 when he notched his second goal of the game. St. Mary's responded once again, scoring three consecutive goals late in the second period to take a 4-3 lead going into the third period.
The Cardinals got another goal to go up 5-3. The Cobs tied it up on goals by Kortan and senior John Kosobud, but St. Mary's scored the final two goals to win.
The Cobbers are now 2-18-1 overall, 1-11 in the MIAC.
