The Cobber Women's basketball team used their experience Wednesday night to blow out Augsburg 96-60 Wednesday night at Memorial Auditorium.
The Cobbers improved to 11-3 in the MIAC and 15-4 overall.
Concordia quickly disposed of the young Auggies, a team comprised entirely of first-year students and sophomores. The Cobbers scored the first nine points of the game and 15 of the first 19 as they rolled to the 96-60 win.
Junior Mindy Schim led the Cobbers in scoring with 17 points on 7 of 8 shooting, including two three-pointers. Senior Jodi Tulibaski added 13 points while both junior Ann Mehrkens and sophomore Stacie Larson had 10.
Even though they scored over 90 points again, defense was what the team focused on in this game.
"We keyed on defense," said sophomore guard Rayna Heard. "We were trying to improve, and we played much better than last time."
The last time was last weekend when the Cobbers traveled to St. Benedict's and lost their third conference game of the year 60-53.
The Blazers came out just as their nickname would suggest by grabbing an early 12-6 lead. But Concordia stormed back to take a 15-12 lead on a Zollar three-point basket.
St. Ben's regained their momentum of the opening minutes following the Cobs nine-point run and put together another string during which they would outscore the Cobbers 17-6 for the remainder of the half.
"They set the tone," said Heard. "They were on an emotional high. By beating us, it enhanced their chances of making the playoffs."
The Cobs stayed with the Blazers for most of the second half, but foul trouble hurt Concordia like the plague. They were whistled for twenty-eight fouls in the game, including five each for Tulibaski and Mehrkens.
This, coupled with uncharacteristically spotty shooting was too much to overcome as Concordia lost 60-53.
"Offensively we didn't move the ball," said Cobber Head Coach Kathy Wall. "Defensively we were stuck behind early. St. Ben's was ready to play and we werenÕt."
Mehrkens led the team with 14 points followed by Tulibaski with 10 and a team-high eight rebounds.
The Cobbers have three games this week. They play at Macalester Saturday afternoon, host St. Mary's at 5:30 p.m. Monday and St. Olaf at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
